LITERATURE: McCarthy

This weblog is turning into a Cormac McCarthy shrine, and with four more of his works coming…!

Had to pull this one out of Blood Meridian for you: “He was holding his wound and with his other hand he ravaged among his clothes for the weapons that were not there and were not there.” (p.274)

While I’ve seen this technique used before, and may have even had the wherewithal to use it myself once, I’ve never seen it used so gloriously as when placed among the other carefully arranged words that is McCarthy’s style and voice of the narrator. I’m learning at least to appreciate more the writing techniques as I am reading, without detracting from the story line, but these little phrases do still manage to stop me short.

McCarthyism has taken on a new meaning for me and I think I’m in love. I can say this because I’m in the shop where Edgar can’t see me.
