BLOGGING: On Comments

From John at J-Walk, in his post on Kottke’s post on weblog comments:

"Without the comments, it would be like talking to myself and I’d soon lose interest in my own blog."

Yep.

Numbers mean nothing.  As a matter of fact, it’s worse when people read and have nothing to say in response.  So my deep gratitude and thanks to all who have kindly left comments over the years; it means a lot.

I feel exactly the same way. I wonder and wonder about this, usually when i have nothing else to obsess about, or too much else to obsess about and this makes a nice diversion. Why do some blogs attracts 26 comments to a post that is a list of what they like to eat, while a finely crafted post about imagination gets 2? Makes me know that if I ever finish these novels, no one would read them!

I sometimes think people are intimidated into silence by a finely crafted post… but will contribute to a “what I like to eat” list because it requires no thought or effort.
