EDUCATION: Probabilities

Thanks to all who commented below on the relative frequencies of the probability of not burning in hell p(Not Hell) versus hell p(Hell) if statistics probabilities of an A = p(A) is not mutually exclusive.

Everything I walked out of the house with this morning regarding probabilities was lost somewhere crossing Route 6. Did not do well with whatever I managed to comprehend on today’s exam.

The professor is excellent. I am not.

But I am a nice person most of the time, and I do make excellent stuffed shrimp.

EDUCATION: Mindset

I will not burn in hell for eternity if I don’t get an A in Statistics.
I will not burn in hell for eternity if I don’t get an A in Statistics.
I will not burn in hell for eternity if I don’t get an A in Statistics.
I will not…will I?

REALITY: Sunday

Incredibly beautiful Sunday day. Summer still, yet autumn air is circling. Green grass wonders when it can finally go to sleep, and leaves hold on with dry-hand grips to branches they have loved in a summer fling. Flowers shake their heads deciding if they have the time for just one more spurt of blooms, and peppers laugh with time till they turn red.

REALITY AND WRITING: Worthy Words

Sometimes, it just seems egotistical to keep a journal open to the world. Some thoughts that find their way to textual image seem so important, or express such emotional ups and downs, or simply are a vent to get the feelings out. Some, I will admit, seem so profound or downright dazzling with their brilliance or eloquence at times, I type them as they flow and reread them with such pride.

But then, when I look out and see the world with eyes and ears more open to the pain or joy or intelligence that surrounds me, it humbles me and makes me want to pull my words back inside to where they likely best belong.

It may be best to give some thought, I think, to what importance words can serve and learn to use them better without abuse.

REALITY & EDUCATION: Learning Methods

Sometimes we learn not just the topic we study, but more about ourselves in the process.

Although at my age, I must admit that what it’s really doing is reinforcing knowledge that I may choose to be blind to and be avoiding. Learning why, for example, that communications course group had me pegged as extroverted, leader, outgoing, when in fact, I felt myself just the opposite. It all comes down to doing what I have to do to get something done because I get too gung-ho or obsessive about it. Must bring out the aforementioned, otherwise recessive qualities in me, which when in warp mode, probably just come through as bossy and manic.

Must learn to stress less. Go around singing, “Don’t worry, be happy” or “Mañana is good enough for me.”

REALITY: Losing Things

I have lost much dear to me this year, but am also grateful for the almost-tragedies that weren’t. A dear friend of ours is going in for bypass surgery bright and early Monday morning, and this I am pre-counting as a blessing that he’s having it done before it went too far. He needs us now, he lost his wife, our dear friend, just three months ago.

What has me thinking in this somber vein again is the cutting of a tree, an ash that stood proudly to a height of 70 feet or more. It graced the front of my next door neighbor’s yard, and shaded me daily in my shop. It looks so barren there without it, and I deeply feel its loss. And then I think, of other things this neighbor’s home has lost in fifteen years that I’d cared deeply for and cried along with her. Two cats that oversaw the vole population; two labrador retrievers that I played with and “aunted” when their family took vacations; a horse named Bandit that we fed with treats of cabbage leaves and carrots from our garden; a good and honest man.

Life is losing things and people along the way. It’s also gaining all of them and more. Without the memories that are so precious and with luck, cannot be lost at all, it would not be worth the price.

NEW MEDIA, REALITY &WRITING: Weekend Workload

Got a bunch of stuff to do this weekend, and cannot afford the luxury of taking meandering paths. Might need to hover above the maze in a helicopter and touch down here and there.

Besides rushing to get a few frames done in the shop today, I’ve got my statistics book to study for an early Monday morning exam. I’ve also brought in some New Media information to do something on a project of a remake of “Little Red Cap” to help move that along, and yes, I’ve brought in that story I’m working on although I’ve decided it’s just not ready for the deadline this week, and needs a lot more work. I’m going to (between putting frames together) read it aloud, and see if the voice problem becomes more evident. Very often we’re so used to reading something to ourselves in our head that it becomes the “norm” and doesn’t evidence the obvious flaws. This often happens when we read over our own work and allow the same typos to go unnoticed.

Should be a productive day.

LITERATURE: “afternoon, a story”

A hypertext fiction story by Michael Joyce, “afternoon, a story” is something I was antsy to play with, and found a couple minutes tonight to do just that.

I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. Just getting used to the rather simplistic format (compared to what’s available these days, and what I’ve seen just online in brief surfing around–this was written in 1987, produced and copyrighted by Eastgate Systems in 1992).

With my poor sense of direction, I tended to drift a bit and perhaps need more serious time put into focusing on negotiating the links in a more planned out method.

I’ll play with it some more.

WRITING: That Voice Thing Again

Well, this is a little disheartening. Someone who hasn’t read my work in a while just went through a story for me and in all honesty–which I completely appreciate–made the remark that my new found “voice” comes off as choppy.

Seems I’ve gone overboard with description as well, while at the same time, curing my former bad habit of “tell” (why leave anything to the reader’s interpretation?) to the point of complete vagueness. This is not the proper way, I’m sure, to leave the reader with questions. I’ve also juggled time around but ended up dropping all the balls.

Back to the drawing board.

REALITY: Generational Gaps, Medicine Caps

Every item tells a story, a different story every day. SUN – MON – TUES…all the way through Saturday. We tell our time through daily pills, through cases throughout our lives. Today I brush my teeth and empty pills from the next full space. But…what? It’s FRI today, and THURS pills are in my hand. Wondering if I lost myself in space somehow for one whole revolution of the earth. Or did I brush my teeth the day before?

No worry, really; they’re only vitamins and save your skin from sagging and put color in your cheeks. But I remember long ago, a single pill in daily rows, S-M-T-W-T-F-S, and then again, again, and one more time. These were pills that caused a lot more worry if one were missed. These were pills for youth and love and planning for the future.

I’ve opened pills for elderly, and set them out and checked them. SUN – TUES….halves and colors every other day. This too, is cause for worry. Or it used to be.

REALITY: Spatial Interference

Who would have thought the morning sky could lie?

Cirrus cloud feathers track slowly across the blueness of unending space. Odd angles though, in streams not blowing with their brothers. The mark of man, above his earth, has reached far within, without, allotted space with jet trails mimicking the work of God or Mother Nature.

REALITY & WRITING: Night Magicians

Tree frogs, unaware of calendars and turning pages, resuscitate the breathless summer in the early autumn nights. Fiction of a season like a book that shouldn’t end, but lingers in the mind to travel further. Darkness shuts our eyes to sad conclusions. We reach inside to pull the memory of the days bright lit and wondrous, remembered beams that hide the true sun’s cruel brownly dulling field. Like a movie, flashing on a screen that isn’t real, accompanied by the tree frog’s hopeful song.
