REALITY: Saturday

Rainy day. Everything’s gray. Nothing to say.

Anyone else out there ruled by the weather?

Wow! My typepad hitcounter just went way up the past couple of days!

Oh, wait a minute…

It’s just me in love with my new color scheme.

WRITING & REALITY: Nightlights

One last look into the moonless night from my darkened kitchen window; the snowball bush fluorescent with the sunlight gathered from the day. But look—one bloom has fallen to the ground it seems, separate from the others, and it is walking more separately away. Her children grown on summer’s seeds, Mama Skunk, alone again, is searching in the night.

REALITY: Motivational Theory

Arms and legs not dangling, doing something, even if that something isn’t needing to be done gives a minor sigh of having done. Things that do need doing are just complicating things that can’t be faced with half a brain or less of fullest comprehension, contemplation and resolve.

I am reading. I am writing. I’m not ironing, weeding, framing. I’m just doing, I am designing, I am calling things important. Lies can be prevarications–doesn’t that sound so much better?–and the slightest edge in gaining is a call for celebration, or a practice for the ballgame, either one.

REALITY: Food for Thought

Dinner out last night, pizza of the very best aroma, flavors, colors. Pepper living green and pungent hot; sausage wafting scents of garlic, fennel, sauce of cheery ripe tomatoes, anchovies instead of dreaded salt, and broccoli and mushrooms, well, they just laid there. So much good stuff to cover evil high-carb base of bread, serving just to hold and get a grip. And salads, oh my Lord, the salads, creamed with famous house homemade dressing.

Friends with tears between the courses, crying at a look, a word. Two friends are missing; one gone by divorce the other taken from us much too soon to talk or point it out. To everyone around we looked to be three couples. We were in fact, two couples and two singles. They probably wondered why the women hugged and cried.

Tonight, another friend is coming to our dinner table. Shrimp stuffed with scallops, clams and mushrooms dabbed with bits of greens and whites that hopefully are herbs and spices. Potatoes, super salad, and lemon slices carved benignly laying by the dipping butter bowls. No reason for the watching of the diets, not tonight; perhaps there should be red wine, but there’s white. Etiquette rules my table, not Dr. Arkins now, but fresh fruit is steeping in a blend of imported sour cherry syrup and dry sherry. No, no ice cream with this, but Italian lemon ice. All right then, there will be fresh whipped cream to top it off.

Neha of Wanderlust is taking to her wandering again, to Seton Hill to feed her lust for knowledge. We must, at least, make her know she’s always welcome back, if hunger of another sort could lure her back. But then, I suppose we are just appetizers for the seekers of gourmet; but then again, it is the proper way to serve them.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: Things That Irk

Every now and then I read something that brings out an inner voice that clashes miserably with what I’ve been developing here, and I’m tempted to open another blog called, “Hardass.”

This, from the BBC News this morning:

“A-level wait ‘threatens health’

The stress of waiting for A-level grades – due to be published this Thursday – could be damaging teenagers’ health, a snapshot study suggests.

Hertfordshire University researchers found 21% suffered from depression, 12% from insomnia and that 8% had experienced panic attacks.”

Wonder how long it’ll take before someone thinks to sue?

This is one of the most important lessons these kids can learn in life—that mama’s not always going to come running with the bottle—and the media and some halfwit study are focusing on health issues. Yes, it’s stressful. Deal with it! Then maybe they won’t be running for another bottle—of Prozac—as young adults.

WRITING & REALITY: Writing Reality

Sometimes I write in metaphor, and sometimes not. Reality needs dressing up for many reasons; often pain is either hidden or understood in words that make it more real in the seeing of the textual version of the scene. Joy can be notched up a bit to share an episode that caught us at the time but loses in the telling. Nature has become a history of what we were, a living lesson that evolves in its own time; a time that man has wound up tight to fly much faster for some reason, and blurring whir of hummingbird wings cannot keep up the pace.

I’m frightened by the facing of a new semester. I’ve lost too much of late, while gaining too much more of knowledge of real life. Statistics and New Media, analytical and explorative; spaces in which I find both comfort and release. And yet, I am hard-pressed to keep my fingers off the buttons canceling out.

A need is there to read and write and still I need a cave; or come out in the sunshine and revel in what is left, forgetting what was important left behind. Or have I simply lost the trail and feel again that overwhelming fear I felt at five years old, teased by a loving uncle into belief I’d never know the warmth of home again.

Fear of failure, of non-comprehension or lack of time and mental input; or maybe just the putting off of goals just as the ribbon comes in sight. Human fears, shared by the majority, though hidden in demeanor—or as with writers, in their words.

WRITING: Seasonal Being

I dread the coming of winter. I am old, and can feel the snap of cold in the morning air earlier than the striplings around me. There is less food, there is a yellowness to my pallor that seeps in during the nights this late in the summer. My clothes are too thin and I seek something new, bright and bold for the grand Halloween party that is our traditional end to the season. But then, after that…I remember and grimace at standing bare naked in noondays that never feel real heat of the sun. It would be nice, I suppose, to move way down south where my relatives live; they claim they feel comfortable all the year through. But I’ve heard of the storms, the dangers of wind and the rain that can beat down the best. It worries me more, so I stay seeing this is what I’m used to; besides, my roots are planted deep in the north. Though it would have been nice–as I envy my brothers around me, dripping in shaggy blue-greens that they live in all year–perhaps in my next life, I shall come back as an evergreen, maybe a spruce.

REALITY & WRITING: Myopic Duskvision

Perimeter check of the backyard: A peach peeks from rain-dripping leaves! How did I miss it–I check it each day; for the late frost had killed all the blossoms, I thought.

I take out binoculars, as the peach flies away; rosy and plump in the slight rays of sun.

Mrs. Cardinal sweeps through the trees.

REALITY & WRITING: Feeling Stupid

I feel so unintelligent today. The words stick like Holy Hosts to the roof of my mouth, and no dislodging by a sacrilegious writhing tongue can set them free.

Bowing head nor gazing at the heavens will release the thoughts that fly like angels pricked by pitchforks in my brain. Silence, meditation, doubt and useless joy that turns to evil beings that flicker, snicker, laugh in glee at Christian plight.

I need the open air and sunlight to see better by. I need the open sky.

REALITY: Insurance

Bills for pills and spills arrive, discounted by the gods as superfluous. Cut them in half, take one every three days, live just a little less longer. Health care, the American way.

REALITY & WRITING: A Different Morning

White quiet morning, left to the lords of the night. Like vampires they claim the sunless sky to fly freely, beaking at bugs unaware of the difference that dawned on this day.

Treefrogs are peeping in coolness of night, ignoring the light, forgiving the hands on the clock that can lie. Red and blue streaks and the greylings and blackbirds, still sleep in the lack of the warm giving rays.

When will they notice, I wonder; that day has already appeared.

REALITY: Eye to Eye

How can we not agree, on what seems so obvious; the line goes from wrong to right, bad to good, here to there.

In facing each other, I see with my right eye—which is that on your left; maybe that is where we should start.

The path of agreement, is only achieved, if we line up to follow and march to the sun—or the moon.

Or better, I think, with both eyes wide open; facing and crossing the gap; to focus together, to meet at the center—the X where the lines intersect.

REALITY: Friends

081504r
Pat and I met as sophomores in high school, she being transferred from another local school. We were such opposites: She, tall, blonde, extroverted, funloving to the point of peeing her pants when she laughed hard; me, short, light brown hair, introverted, serious to the point of gloomy in my efforts to be “deep.” We doubledated, we were at each other’s houses, we cruised together, slurped raw clams and ate lobster rolls at the hot spot near the shore, slept overnight in a “cat house” in PA with her dad, stayed a couple weeks down in Florida where we bought our first two-piece bathing suits with ties that you pulled to turn them into bikinis. We graduated valedictorian and salutatorian of the business course in our class. We lied for each other, but were completely honest with each other. We did just about everything together–yes, got drunk for the first time together on hard cider–until she got married to a great guy and moved to Tennessee. I tried, but just couldn’t warm up to his twin brother enough to follow through with our plans to be sister-in-laws, but I was main of honor at their wedding, and twenty years later, she was at mine.

081504r21Pat came up to Connecticut a couple months ago, surprising me with a phone call from our own town hall less than a mile away from my house. We met, we gabbed, we updated, we laughed until Pat nearly peed her pants.

Some day I hope to actually get to Tennessee and spend some time together. There’s no Jimmy’s for lobster rolls in TN, no parking at Coon Hollow after shooting pool. But I’m sure Pat and I could find a way to get ourselves in some sort of trouble after just a bit of time together and a taste for some adventure.

(I know, I really need to find out why my scanner does such a lousy job on color and resolution. And, I suppose, learn to use my digital camera for new pictures.)
