WRITING: Voice

My friend and professor, Steve Ersinghaus has hinted in a post on his weblog that I may finally have found my long-sought-after voice. I would point you to the post, but it’s embarrassing in its generousity as much as it is instructive in its definition of voice, so I shall excerpt it here:

“Voice is one of those unteachable elements of observation and telling and is interwoven into the thing in itself. It’s an impression, an echo, the personality of a speaker. A voice says things a particular way.”

Since the particular entry of mine that he has referenced was inspired again by my time sitting and staring at the backyard in the evening—as opposed to my early morning inspirations—I shall attempt to repeat the experiment to prove its hypothesis and will be heading out shortly again tonight. I may stay and wait for the words to write themselves in my mind This is much too important, too long a quest, too exciting to not follow up. If the voice is in me when I’m out there, that’s where I shall remain.

Sure hope the coyotes don’t eat me.

REALITY?: Free At Last!

Ice cream for supper–Friendly’s Forbidden Chocolate, the best. Cookies and carrots for lunch. I shall breakfast tomorrow at three in the morning on spaghetti and snails–not escargot, and stay up until three Friday too. Maybe I’ll lock up the shop for two days, close up the blinds, hiding and writing and not wear any clothes. I can, you know, I can do whatever I want. My husband is gone for four days.

WRITING: Experience

Some time around four a.m. I fell through time. Deja vu in future tense, I feel at home within the skin surrounding what I’m guessing is a soul. Or maybe just a mind that is a four-drawer vertical filing cabinet that squishes invisibly fitting in the furrows of a brain. Poke it with a probe, it sings; harder, it will cry. Memories are all together in one place with subfolders and strange labels: Good Experience, Bad Times, Corners Never Peeked Around, Slippery Slopes, and Thin Ice. Within are more divisions, maybe Never or If The Chance Comes Around Again. The drawers themselves, I notice now, are labeled too: Normal, Warp Speed, Just Get Through, and Don’t Go There. Shall I dig in, elbows deep, and read?

WRITING: Night Stories

The moment my head touched the pillow I was asleep.

No, that’s a lie. First I cried.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: Aspirin Therapy & Profits

From the “Guess who’s going to try their damnedest to use this vital information as a marketing ploy to make some money” department:

For Some, Aspirin May Not Help Hearts
By ANDREW POLLACK

Published: July 20, 2004 New York Times

“More than 20 million Americans take aspirin regularly to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. But new evidence suggests that for many of them, the pills do little if any good.

“Scientists are racing to clarify further the significance of aspirin resistance and how to counteract it. What they learn could influence how one of the oldest and most widely consumed medicines is used, perhaps leading to more customized therapies.

“Dr. Mark A. Goodman, president of Cardiovascular Medical Associates in Garden City, N.Y., said he tested all his patients and found that 20 to 25 percent were aspirin resistant. For those people, Dr. Goodman said, he first tries a higher dose, because that is the least expensive alternative.

“If that does not work – and it usually does not – he prescribes another anticlotting drug, Plavix, that can cost $3 or more a day, compared with pennies a day for aspirin.”

REALITY?: Evening Story

Rarely do I sit out back in evening, but tonight, a book, a coffee mug and I are drawn to wet-washed early evening sky and cooling air. Brightest blue with just a touch of ochre from the sun, and who or what, I wonder, made the clouds the subtle shades of slate to white? Rarer still, this sudden ache for brush and paint and paper when the popcorn puffs and lines and swirls go by. Cluster clouds are best for finding faces, gargoyles easiest of all because they lend themselves to all the frilly frowns and hairdos.

Every second ticking by, a change is in the painting. Darkest clouds beneath the fluffy white of stratused angel wings. These smokey wisps are rising from the horizon. Evidence to my imagination that they come from brimstone factories far below.

Unprepared to reconstruct and capture in a still, these moving pictures, I watch, and sip my coffee until it’s gone, noting sadly that I haven’t read a word. Realizing that my tongue has darted out a time or two to catch a drip just as it rolls down Willie’s forehead. Too, a little guilty with the pleasure in the knowing I have lingered with a lick upon his cheek.

Given to me by my sister, graced with image and abandon of the rules of prim behavior, my Willie mug and I share evening light.

WRITING: Discipline and Focus

It seems I still am chunking it, writing bits and pieces that are unrelated, scattered like a shotgun at the world. Perhaps my mind is wizened by age and not the wiser, unable to focus to any depth on more than a single topic. Freed a bit from months of slow and steady grieving, I try to do the things I’ve left undone. But these are tasks more automatic, practical; impossible to do, though, with shrouds of clouds within the brain.

Creativity, for me, means utter and complete absorption, dedication and delight to the exclusion of all else. When in its midst I do not sleep, it may instead be said I faint from lack of rest. Food is tasteless or forgotten as I pass through time not counted by the minutes, hours or days but flowing all from a beginning of a story to its end.

I must get back to that, that mental state of unawareness of the world.

WRITING: R comes before W

Oh boy, oh joy. The mailman broughteth the new issue of Confrontation. Just when I’m feeling inadequate and uninnovative as a writer, imaginative and creative as the slowly slug. (slow + lowly = slowly, adj.)

Why doth the pain and depth of reality perceived not reach intoeth (love that one!) the mind from heart so seared by burning fires? The soul cannoteth (another good one!) help protect, its flimsy filmy wisps of thought would turn to smoke if held too near the flames.

But yea and verily I say unto you and self again in seeking, never straying from the light at end of darkened path: We must learn to read before we learn to write.

WRITING & REALITY?: Fantasies and Feelings

Lost the muse in mundane daily doings. Technology, creative and intense, sober, serious. Not fanciful, however, though perhaps in dreaming soft where knights fight dragons, bad men in black armor, and the princess calls down to her love all dressed in white. Or a mustachioed Mario, the inventive SIMS, or the very tough and sexy Lara Croft.

Saw a man the other day among the million in the mall. Attracted by his something or the other that I could not name, but recognized from time gone by, the feeling. He looked up for a moment, directly eye-to-eye and lingered like a hypodermic needle filled with essence that would course throughout my bloodstream and inoculate me, cure me, fix whatever’s wrong. Did he know he did that, did he plan it, was it just an absentminded thing he cannot help control.

Fantasy injected in my brain through eyes and body dancing, this drug that alters all reality by clouding it with unimportance, raising new kings and queens to lead the crystal world created in the mind.

I think I’m hearing and will tell a story soon.

TECHNOLOGY: Phooey!

Twelve hours later, with wires dripping the span of 150 feet, I am finally connected via wired cable service to the shop computer. Where I am now. Where, now that it works, I’m afraid to shut it off. On the other hand, after walking back and forth and up and down and in and out for those twelve hours, I really, really need a shower.

By the way, I tried the styrofoam peanut, fishing line and vacuum hose trick, and it didn’t work, mainly because it’s a thirty-foot length of underground half-inch conduit that the phone line is already in. I tried from both ends several times. So, after I laid out the new pvc tubing and was just about to dig a trench, Spouse comes up with the brilliant idea of disconnecting the phone line, tieing a string to the end, pulling it out, then pulling it back through again together with the internet cable. This worked like a charm. Also was able to use this method to get through the garage wall to the cellar and up through the basement to the computer room. I thanked him and told him how clever he was and never asked why he didn’t come up with this sooner–he saw me flying back and forth between the house and the barn, the house and Home Depot, the house and Radio Shack, the house and Agway. Guess engineers just need time to thunk on it a bit. He made steaks for dinner though, so I had to forgive him his reticence to help. He’s also, I must admit, experienced in attempting to help me when I’m on a mission, and so has learned.

So that’s it. I’m done. I need a drink now.

REALITY? & TECHNOLOGY: Poetry in Motion

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again some other day,
Little Susie needs to play
outside, digging trenches.

WRITING & REALITY: Lost

Maybe it was left behind in tangled sheets, no backwards glance to notice it, no value given at the time to make it that important. Maybe it was hidden ‘neath the sofa cushions with the Catcher in the Rye I was not supposed to read. Could it have been lost before even that? No, naiveté is born and bred to overcome; here and gone a thousand times with learning. A feeling then, that lessened with the learning, emboldened by the doing, replaced with confidence. Knowledge good and evil produce the same result in this, a loss of innocence. One goes by name of guilt, the other by experience, but still the same.

WRITING: Soul

From Andy, at Older and Growing, an excerpt from a series he is posting called, Soul: Part I:

“There is but one essential prerequisite that must be fulfilled in order to be able to communicate, and it has very little to do with language or skill. It is simply that you or I have to have experienced something in the first place. To have something that we want to communicate. Truly experienced it, engaged in it with our whole selves, with an awareness that encompasses body, mind, heart and soul.”

I would think these brief essays will be of interest to all, and particularly to writers.

BLOGGING: On the Bandwagon

A very interesting item in Harry’s Place called Blog TV regarding a new TV program in Italy that will feature various bloggers. As noted, it will be once again stamping a now-free-to-be community with an established seal of approval–or not–from a much more powerful god.

REALITY? & WRITING: Environment

There are some things we need to know, we need to see, we need to feel. I learn by watching, seeking meaning in events beyond my fingertips, within the circle of my vision, what is ruled by that outside of me. Starting simply, seeing millet from the feeder turn to lawn around the pole; finding sunflowers growing in a pot I’ve planted with red and coral geraniums and purple petunias. I help nature reproduce itself and nature then helps me. Here are some astilbe plants I’ve started several years ago. They are pink and crimson, blending well with those much older–fifty years or so, much older–from my father’s mother’s gardens, they are white.

One thing becomes another in the plan in which I dip and dig my fingers in to make a mark somehow. Life changes every season, every day, and cardinals I see are from the eggs laid in the nest within the rhododendron bushes in the early spring. Two young boys, a girl, are taught by feathered mom and dad who still are teaching that the large moving thing is that which fills the feeder, and is trained to answer chirping when the seeds are gone.

We all move together in the mornings. We all sleep in different private places in the nights.
