WRITING: Focus

I’m getting quite a late start this morning in my writing, and all because an idea that won’t go away is bogging and blocking (blogging?) my thoughts, excluding all else from getting through. With a more focused day at hand; that is, limited to under five areas of concentration, I should be able to get through and beyond it to move on through the morning. It started out as a simple piece on friendship, but has spread in directions that encompass a bit more introspective dealings. Usually the best way to handle this sort of predicament is to get the simpler things done first and out of the way, and this is my plan. I’ve left it for now, will go do errands, finalize a draft for an oral Spanish presentation (thank God this is a great class with an excellent professor and terrific classmates; my mastery of the language plus my hesitancy at public speaking should prove a hilarious and embarrassing display), and retire to the shop to continue working with my hands while the thought is allowed to coagulate into a writeable mass.

BLOGGING: Time Well Spent

I did find some time this weekend to search out more sites and blogs that are interesting or downright useful to writers. And, even though it’s listed under “FUN PLACES” try out Magnetic Poetry because it can also be considered a serious writing exercise. Holy Mother Grammatica is a very down-to-earth guide covering some of the most common grammatical errors and rules, and I just fell in love with the name. Electric Pen offers info on e-zines and stories. International Writers Community offers information, tools and forum that can be viewed that are very interesting.

And of course, there is our very own Garmhos that now has a link to the newly established Forum that I’m sure will be a great place to meet and discuss all mediums and genres of storytelling.

Personally, it’s been exciting for me to seek out these links, and I only hope that once I settle down with the newness of it all, I can spend more time reading them all on a more regular basis.

EDUCATION: Deadline Sunday Night

Must be a lot of papers due tomorrow morning, I’m getting folks googling and yahooing and even aolsearching their way to Spinning for some quick info on several of the stories I’ve analyzed briefly here. Just a word to those poor stressed out students everywhere: Don’t take my word for it, what I think about a story, your professor may see as total poppycock. And besides, for your research papers, I’m not really considered an “accredited” source. But hey, go for it if you’re really pressed for time. Your English Professor doesn’t have time to check out the works cited either…

TECHNOLOGY: html tags

Remember all the frantic fixing of this blog I was doing early one morning this past week–after I messed with the settings? Well, I just noticed that I’ve since lost the time tags on the postings. Now I know that I can post-date and time entries to make you think I’ve been up at all odd hours, but honest, I’ve never bothered because I’m usually within 20 ft. of a computer here, so I don’t need to lie, and wouldn’t. But it’s kind of sad to see my format change like this, and it’s one more thing that will take time away from other things I must do today, so please be patient.

I’m workin’ on it.

REALITY?: Intermedial Me

Well, Husband got me as far as the walkway, and I got me the rest of the way shovelling into my barn, burrowing through the deep snow like the voles I hate so much. Meanwhile, they probably spent the night in the shop, just as I was supposed to do.

I’m working right now, and have switched all my CDs from the wonderfully inspiring folk music of the 60s and 70s to Willie, who inspires me in such a wonderful but verrrry different way! Sometimes I wonder about new media combinations and the type of people who will like it versus those like me who like to use just a couple of my senses at a time. Case in point: While I am listening to Willie or Waylon, I can imagine the wrinkles away, subtract a couple years, add an inch or two (use your own imagination on this one) and it may sadly improve the reality that not only is Willie not physically snowed in here with me, the man’s seventy years old. No, I’m not one to be given all the facts in a story.

PEOPLE: Viewpoints

With Waylon wailing in the background…”Nobody knows I’m Elvis…” I sit and occasionally write and otherwise stand and frame my little heart out in this snow-covered barn. And frankly, the “blanket of snow” I ranted over is the perfect description of its insulating effect on the roof, holding in the heat to keep my teeth from chattering.

A sandtruck goes by, and I am not quick enough to have run out and stared it down. This is an ongoing battle between the Town Crew and me. Although we’re pretty much all on a first-name basis in this small town, I have bitterly complained out loud to no one in my empty shop as the trucks fly by spraying sand ten feet onto the lawns that is heart-attack provoking come Spring when it needs to be raked. By mid-January I am resolved and beaten.

But two minutes later, a snowmobile whizzes by, and then another and another, slicking the roadway back into a track impossible for cars to maneuver. That’s okay. On a day like today, the best place to be is snug inside looking out at the softly falling snow that covers the roads and yards like a blanket…

WRITING: Apology

How rude of me to have started the day off complaining about our bad writing habits! And me, of all people! Why just look at my name: Spinning… tales, my wheels, out of control. How much more of a cliché can you be? But then, my excuse is that in the excitement of the moment I had to fill in that big blank box that wanted me to come up instantly with a NAME: ____________.

Perhaps I should practice what I preach and change Spinning to something more appropriate and creative. I rather like Ben’s suggestion commented below of “Prolific Little Monkey.”

WRITING: Clichéd Snow

Whoever first described it as “a blanket of snow” really nailed it. Hearing the words for the first time, one must admire the conception, the thought process, the beauty of finding just the right words. Sometimes it seems that once so perfect a descriptive phrase is coined, it’s impossible to find better words, to even come up with something different.

For a writer, it presents an even more real problem. The phrase becomes stuck in one’s mind and we cannot move beyond it. Clichés are hard to keep out of our writing, but their use is one of the new writer’s biggest downfalls. We must remember that just as it is familiar and natural to us to use it, it is just as familiar to editors and readers, and the words–beautiful as they be–are mentally discarded in the same second they are recognized. Used a few too many clichés, and the entire piece becomes a bore, second-hand, and rejected.

When I find myself using an overused phrase in my writing, I will type it in so that the flow of words is not brought to an abrupt halt, but using bold typeface so that it is easily spotted when I go back and edit. Unless to achieve an effect, for example, to emphasize a point, or in dialogue to expose a dull character, clichés should not be used lest they expose instead a dull writer.

BLOGGING: Link Change

Just wanted to make you all aware of the new weblog called Creativectomy, which is in fact the new home of Jason’s Blurty. Really sharp design, and, it loads much quicker. Jason moved his site because as we new bloggers are finding out, some of the capabilities are too restricting with the simpler formats if you really want to take this to a higher level.

REALITY?: Time to Stop

I’m really bummed out. I know this will mean nothing to most of you, and I wholeheartedly agree that it is infinitesimally minor in the grand scheme, or even in my own life, but I broke a bowl this evening. Rushing, racing, carelessly grabbing soupbowls out of the cabinet, I don’t even feel the sharp jab of pain as my thumb gives and my treasured spatterware bowl lands with a loud crash and flies into several pieces on the kitchen floor.

It’s not the bowl so much as what the bowl represents to me; home, stability, a relative to its matching bowls, plates, mugs and odd pieces and me within this home for thirteen years. Should I really be jeopardizing something like this for just a few seconds’ worth of extra time? This set was special to me, the only one I liked well enough to forego my first daily use set of rooster dishes; the one that was shared with one I love. And no, it’s not easily replaced, as shortly after I completed most of the set, Bennington Pottery burnt down, and for many years did not even produce this pattern.

No, I’m not devastated; not this easily over something quite this simple. But it does make me stop for a sad moment.

BLOGGING: Links

I’ve added more links, and moved some around–such as The Word Foundry, out of Veeery Interesting and where it truly belonged, in Literature & Writing as it is much more than a weblog. If perchance in my fumbling around I drop your link, please let me know!

WRITING & REALITY?: Deadlines

Perhaps it is because I am a writer, gardener and a service professional that I am driven to action by deadlines. Perhaps it is because I respond to deadlines that I am a writer, gardener and framer. Today, they all come crashing together to strike me at the exact same moment and the forecast of snow moves me to bring in the last of the flowerpots, fill the birdfeeders, cover the barn windows (it’s effin freezing in here!) snip tops off bushes as I go blazing by, and snuggle down inside to write and frame into the late night hours, I am sure.

But deadlines come, are met, and work is completed. I’m done outdoors, and in a couple weeks, with school, and framing for Christmas. That leaves writing, and the long elusive time.

TECHNOLOGY: Learning Methods

Well, early morning readers were treated to my version of a flash media show as for three quarters of an hour I frantically created new templates, changed colors of all three sections of Spinning, switched size and color of type and kept checking back on my progress. All this because last night I proudly upgraded to Pro and added in a Creative License Tag. This morning I happened to check the log and it had gone from its lovely burgundy and grey inspirational theme to something else, plus there’s the photo of my sister and I in our little Polish costumes right on the cover! It’s still not totally right, and I have to change some things around again, but bear with me; I’m learning by the self-taught trial and error method, which is how I’ve learned to manipulate the computer since I plunked down $1000 and was shown how to switch the darn thing on, off, and get to Solitaire before being left on my own back in 1996.

WRITING: Group Therapy

Garmhos is well underway as a weblog for writers of all genres and mediums, and though it is tied in with a local group, all are welcome as the internet provides the silky strands of the web to reach and gather at the spider’s table. Visit, comment, and enjoy as it grows to bind the branches of thoughts together.

WRITING: Urgency

So now the Word program is left open and staring back at me when I come flying into the room and sit down at the keyboard. Writers can control words—through superhuman effort, they can learn this much—but there is little control over when the words are delivered from the sky and water and the earth to the brain, are synapsed to their proper lobe and find their way to paper or screen. Of this I am certain, and so must be prepared.

I want a laptop for Christmas.
