WRITING: The S/P Question

While David is happily unwrapping his books, I am indeed in doubt about my feelings towards self publishing my own work.

Being my own best critic (or so I think), having an overwhelming need for validation (personal flaw), and getting rejected every three days or so, I’m thinking more along the lines of "if it’s not good enough for them, then it’s not up to my own standards either and I’m just fooling myself."

Sometimes, wanting something isn’t enough.

  1. Will you ever stop invalidating yourself? Sheesh!
It makes me feel like I want to reach out and nudge you!

You don’t need permission to live, and you don’t need permission to create. I am sure your best instructors have been trying to get that across to you and every other student they taught.

The trap of a formal education where you sit, listen, make notes, and regurgitate for credit is that your success tends to make you wary of striking out on your own.

Now I’ve done it! You got me ranting and I need to blog this or I’ll be stuck with it forever.

Actually, my professor has been trying to kick me out the door into the big scary world for several years now. Formal education has its downside… Many of us grew up with the image of a college education as the only sure ticket out of a life of genteel poverty or manual labor. As an Engineering graduate, that was certainly true for me. On the other hand, I’ve …

Fear of success is as limiting and dangerous as fear of failure. I’ve seen many fine writers recoil from taking the necessary steps to making their dreams a reality. I hope you’ll take a big, deep breath and join the rest of us very flawed writers and enjoy the process along the way.

Oh, I will. I just have to take the dramatic path and go kicking and screaming along the way. Thanks, Vikk!
