WRITING: Sifting Emotions

One thing I am learning from Gabriel Garcia Marquez is concentration on action by character, rather than through dialogue or narrator insight.  Though Marquez may fool me, his technique is simple and straightforward.  The "because he wanted" or "she felt that" or "with his attitude of" are all at a minimum.

A man picks up his gun and forms an army to go to war.  We decide his reasons from what we know of him.

A hug from JM at the meeting the other night that said a lot.  An honest response from what he read in my face.  Actions.
