NEW MEDIA: Afternoon, A Story – Narrative Structure and Voice

I have decided to read through this hypertext novel by first exploring the main trail.  It is told in first person pov, the protagonist being a separated husband wondering about an accident that may have involved his wife and son.

The story opens as the man is having lunch with his friend (business partner?) and afterwards he calls the school where his son should be in attendance and realizes that no one has seen him.  Then he calls his wife’s office and again, she is not there and he must speak with her co-worker/lover.

I imagine his squinting as he tries to position the phone, squinting likewise trying to moor himself between her wonderfully muscular thighs while she sighs like water.

The prose is poetic and yet I imagine the words spoken in a deep and saddened tone because the character has already marked me with his mood.  Unlike many game stories which move forward with action, or interactive fiction which is somewhat emotionless, this form of new media sings of writing and character.

I would liken it to that of visionary poetry. The author is Michael Joyce.
