NEW MEDIA: Mixing the Methods

Quick thought on visuals, audio and language used together to tell story…

Just happened upon Halloween on Ice on CPTV while Nancy Kerrigan is skating to Black Magic Woman.  It doesn’t work.

There’s something about the continual motion of skating that isn’t always in sync with the music.  Sure, the skater can jump or spin at appropriate times, but the rest of the smooth fluid movement doesn’t match the stop and go of the song.  It’s not just the choreography or Nancy’s (great) skating, it’s that the action isn’t always appropriate to the medium.

Just thoughts forming here, but they seem to be pointing to a more relevant sort of emphasis on one while the other sinks into the background, or that one must necessarily stop or disappear rather than forcing a side-by-side play.  This is of course, easier to do when playing in software than when skating or when playing a specific tune all the way through.
