REALITY: The Lull…

…before the storm of customers who want their work completed and want it now.  Working Saturday and Sunday, Monday, Tuesday but two out of four must be for something more than money. Learning, yes, and writing some, and reading and the reaching into hollow places where ribbons and cables and plugs and drives magically bring people together who want to communicate, now.

REALITY: Friends

Last night Thursday night dinner normally but not cooked by me this Thursday night.  Three men and a woman in a restaurant bar with peanut shells on the floor.  I will not do it, cannot, build instead a growing pile on the placemat on the table.  Prime rib here and here, swordfish there and all mine–twin softshell crab.

Always, ever, long as I remember back, there have been men beyond my man of the time and place I owned with him.  Our home, a home for wayward men.  New Year’s Eve I wear black velvet long and sleek and serve them stuffed shrimp and wine.  Always, ever they are welcome in my home, our home.  A lady in the company of men; one of the guys but not.

Tonight we’re out again, two couples now, and I fall for, must have the oysters for my meal.  We talk across, diagonal and parallel, but the lady and I share something more and attached to the sterling bracelets that we wear.  She has one, I wear two. I think someday she’ll wear all three together on her arm.  Dainty slim and boldly lettered friends forever.

Always, ever, lovingly.  Four friends and food.

WRITING: Meaningful Metaphor

Just dawned on me that most of my metaphorical references are nature or food related.

Time, I think, to start scouting out that cave I’ve wanted to close myself into once wireless range has been expanded.

NEW MEDIA: In Action

At last, a plan.

Not ready yet for utilizing the special software programs by incorporating a story within the opportunity they offer, but just the opposite; a step backward is needed to both understand the process of the paths, and fix my flawed writing by forcing me to concentrate on story.

Hyperfiction, but in traditional text and book format.  Three stories I shall write, and each must have their separate fulfillment of the arc.  Different, but related:  They will be attached by thoughts, linked by words, leading each on separate paths again to offer many, many more stories within the three.  A cauldron of ingredients that could be soup, or stew, or simply sauce for chicken, beef or pork.  Or even clam chowder–it could be this as well.  The ham that becomes a casserole or pea soup as the week goes by.

Interesting, maybe even an exciting, but most clearly a learning project.  And a deadline to make it all happen–otto calls.  I don’t have a clue how to start, but I’m guessing that it’s just to start writing a story, create a scene with characters and some tension, and let it go from there.

So, if I’m missing in action from here for a bit, that’s where I’ll be.  Cooking up a buffet.

REALITY: Mood Music

Big mistake, listening to Waylon when the mood is right.  Feeling him deep in my gut, getting all of me involved in blue sound.

WRITING: Workshops & Discourse in General

Sometimes I think that the deeper I fall into this, the more I want to get out.

Perhaps it would have been appropriate to speak up at last night’s meeting, but I didn’t want to embarrass or single anyone out because it’s not something that doesn’t happen to everyone at some point.  In workshopping a piece, the words "poorly written" came up.  To me–and a few others–this was uncalled-for.  Not only because of the work itself, but because it’s hitting the writer instead of concentrating on the writing.

It never ceases to surprise me that while we’re so darned careful being "politically correct" (except for me; I don’t bother with that), we are losing our sense of empathy in being correctly polite.  It’s almost as if we’ve invented a set of rules and words to use instead of getting involved enough to assess and make an attempt at understanding feelings.

I just don’t know.  I seem to be in the minority with my way of thinking, and I’m very much doubting the wisdom of it.  This is only one of many things that are getting me thinking lately, and well, just getting to me.

REALITY: And Poetry

I can’t claim to know anything about poetry, but one line from a poem we heard last night at the writers meeting has stuck in my head and become a mantra for the immediate future.  It’s not particularly poetic, I suppose, but then much passes these days, and I find a mountain of meaning in the simple words:  "I don’t want to."

Real, relative, concise.  No fantasy or b.s.  It carries the easy decision of a moment; it carries the weighted soul of a lifetime.  It reveals character, or a temporary character flaw.  It can also reveal just the opposite of it’s normal connotation by the deed it is dealing with.  It shows reluctance to carry through at all, yet it does not foretell the future–for how often do we do what we must, rather than what we want.

But "I don’t want to" is above all, honest.

REALITY: Dead Lines

Well Al, the bad little dog, has been taken from its wicked stepmother and now is romping happily in the home of a loving elderly gent who looks like Santa with a bad hangover.  Santa’s eyes are sparkling happy blue.  Al is now named Rusty.

Two terrific story ideas this morning.  But missed all May 31st deadlines for submissions of what already was written.  I suspect sabotage.

Signed on in my online course last night.  Pressure’s off since the grade doesn’t mean anything to me anyway.  Don’t really care to do any more than pass it.

Gotta read, gotta write, gotta figure out a motherboard.

EDUCATION: And Life Ever After

Well, thanks to Jerz’s Literacy Weblog I’ve got plenty to say, about this article by Margaret Talbot at the New Yorker:  "Best in Class".

Fortunately, I’m down enough to not feel up to ranting about it, but I’ll make a couple remarks.  First of all (this phrase, I am sure, will soon be marked for obsolescence once the liberals figure it out), what’s the sense in even having a grading system if there’s no purpose to striving for the top?  Teachers are already complaining about the majority of students who just go for the credit of the course and are content with C-.  I wonder what would happen if pass/fail were the criteria instead.  Secondly, while I may have wondered why our own valedictorian was going for the enth Associates degree, she was the best and deserved the credit.

The only reason the girl in the article was so upset she lost out was because she hadn’t checked the rules about the tiebreaker being accumulated number of credits, then yelled foul when the real winner had "secretly" taken an extra course.  What on earth prevented her from checking out the rules if her dream since she was a little girl was to be valedictorian?  Seems to me he was smarter than her and his actions evidenced that.  (It ain’t all book-larnin’!)  And why would he have to make any kind of announcement of his plans?

Like I said in my comments on Dr. Jerz’s weblog, try taking away the Player of the Year Award in any school and see if that gets by.

I’m really sick to death of panty-waisted crybabies who claim to cheer the right of the individual yet insist on squashing anyone who rises to a certain level by earning either fame or fortune above what they think he should have.

(Note:  I also whined a bit about not being recognized at graduation for highest honors–or any honors at all, in fact.  I have a 3.93 GPA but without having finished the final science elective, and despite accumulating 73 credits to date, the rule states that the honors will not be recognized at graduation.  I can whine, I can get mad, I can place blame where it belongs–on myself, and I have the right to do that.  But it would never occur to me to make the school change the rules just so I could feel better.)

LITERATURE: Eras

Dorothy Parker’s stuff, of course, great.  Trying though, to consider the story in contemporary time.  Once rewrote an Atwood story into a prior century version as my peers couldn’t relate to the thinking of the story time.  No doubt about it, Parker’s cynicism hints at the future in her treatment of relationships of her time, yet the story’s are exquisite in writing style but dated in event.

How much does this affect the reader’s enjoyment and evaluation of a story when he cannot understand nor empathize with the characters?  I believe that while the classics can survive, the short story must be extraordinary to endure.  The novel has time on its side–time to allow a slow slipping into the period.  But the short story must be more immediately comfortable to the reader, I would think, because details have been eliminated.  There is no time to get used to place, space, time of an era one is not familiar with.

But then again, sci fi and such is not relative or easily settled into.

Interesting questions.  I must read more, and concurrently interweave the generations.

REALITY: ? (Added: Life and Death Decisions)

I have little problem with coming up with something to write about here, but I’m having my troubles lately with titles.  Odd, since that is how many of my stories start.

But I feel like devil and angel today, which is quite typical of my personality though not usually a simultaneous event.

On the right hand, I’m trying to save a poor little bad doggie’s life by finding a better home than the one next door where the lady has "had it up to here!"

On the left (please, no offense meant to left-handed people here), I’m finally getting around to framing four old high school portraits of an elderly customer’s husband’s children, and I know that two of them have since "passed on" and I need to put their names and dates in little windows on those two.

Problem is, I forgot which ones they were.

Really, you’d have to have my own morbid sense of humor to find this funny.

REALITY: Hocus Focus

Truly magic, the powers of concentration turn piles of pictures into finished framed pieces.  Closer now to my normal two-week waiting time.  And then, to get the shop cleaned up and cardboard cut for corners.

What next to focus my attention on?

REALITY: Acts of God

Just had a thought circulating for a post, set my fingers on the keys, and a spider dropped down in front of me, cut his line and scurried beneath the keys. Wonder if Dell covers that?  (I didn’t get the super-duper throw-it-at-your-spouse and it’s still covered insurance policy.)

I’m working today.  Strange way to take advantage of my new single status, but it just seems to be the thing to do.
