WRITING: The Cover Letter

Interesting spin here, as well as frustrating, on the selling of creative work via a professional yet creative cover letter.

Sort of like sticking a spark into a woodpile.  Combining two voices, or, if possible, mediating the creative one into following the rules.

I’m tempted to do the blah, blah, blah bit, and close with something to the effect that if one has gotten this far through the letter, one is beyond the dreary, and the excitement is on the very next page.

I suppose I could take the opportunity of this stumbling block to play with the stories themselves..it’s certainly more fun.

REALITY: Spring Break

Friend Neha should be wheeling across Pennsylvania right now, coming home from Seton Hill for spring break.  It would be nicer, I suppose, if Tunxis and SH could get their scheduled breaks more in sync, but then again, I’m sure Neha would like to see so many friends among the crew back here, as well as hopefully sit in on a class or two.

And I suppose, I’ll have to make good on my cookie offer.

WRITING: The Query Letter

While stumbling through the process of writing a decent submission letter, I happened upon this website that is run by two contributors who evidently are on the receiving end of query letters.  Interesting.  Check it out.

WRITING: Playing with Words

White morning, silent as black night.  Pierced by red cardinal sound.

White mourning, silent black knight.  Pierced by red cardinal blood.

Black morning, crying of white bombs of night.

Black mourning, crying of white blades of knight.

REALITY: Natural Depressants

People who change at the sight of a dollar.

Change that’s not for the good.

Getting whacked with a shovel on your way out of the hole.

Or tripping on the very top step.

Losing your grip.

And sliding all the way down.

WRITING: Submission

Truly, submission in its most humbling of meanings.

Kicked creativity out of first place for a few moments to hunker down with the more serious business of the cover letter in submitting a couple of stories to more than a couple of literary journals (even whilst I pick and prod at the stories themselves).  I’ve noticed one big switch in my brain:  Voice.

Susie Secretary takes over, and while I may indeed peruse some samples (see what I mean?) of query and submission letters, I would prefer to start with a rough draft of my own to keep it at least on a personally me basis and fresher than something found in a book.

But I’ve taken this first step at least, and have an outline typed up that needs filling in according to both general and journal-specific requirements.  The hardest part is the short bio that some require.  Do they want me unpublished, or does the weblog, an small-scale publishing of an archery magazine help or hinder?  How about that one poem online?

Will they settle for "I’m a nice person and work like a son of a gun?"

REALITY: Story

Writing, watching and listening to Jim Croce on PBS.  Always was one of my favorites.  "Time in a Bottle" is one of the loveliest songs I’ve ever heard.

This artist wrote most of his songs, and each held a story, sang in a voice that had a slightly warbly sensitive sound.  But it was the story in the lyrics that was pure poetry.

WRITING: Anudder Metaphor

Was so thrilled to turn the blanket from the snow into the sky earlier, but can’t get this picture from my mind…

We are the baloney between the bread of earth and lettuce sky.

Heh-heh-heh.

REALITY: Saving

I have the sand that Andy gave me in the hour that he died.  A wind-cut icy Saturday January morning.  In between the breaths I gave him back I never thought to thank him.

The sand I poured to store inside July’s sun umbrella stand.  I couldn’t find the scoop nor heart to spread it on the walk.  I sit in summer heated breeze out on the patio, beneath the cold shade of the umbrella.

WRITING: Metaphor

Aha!  At last…

On a bed of snow, under a blanket of sky, we slide through life in a dream.

REALITY: 5:45 a.m.

In the straining light of a birthing sun, baby blue snow, baby pink sky–congratulations!  It’s a day!

REALITY: Ice Skating

Itty bit slippery out there tonight.  I’m not used to driving on snow or ice, because for almost twenty years I’ve had a home business and simply didn’t  go out because I didn’t have to.  But Greenie performed like a champ; a Honda CRV (yes, an SUV that gets 25 mpg and passes emissions tests with flying colors, has excellent visibility, is not oversized so it’s not in anyone’s way, I need the four-wheel drive and I need a car capable of carrying client’s work, anything I stick in from Home Depot, everything needed for a long weekend away, and a decent sized Christmas tree–though not all at once, so forget ragging on me about SUV’s).  I felt completely comfortable driving it, and though 4-wheelers are not NOT going to slide on ice, it’s a safer vehicle–especially for someone who’s terrified because they’re not used to slippery conditions.

So there.

REALITY: Giggles

I’ll have to come back and delete this entry, but I’m sitting here giggling my head off despite the fact that within 15 minutes after I shoveled the driveway the damn snowplow came by to fling the mud back on it and it started snowing again, but there’s nobody else I can share this with, and I can’t even explain it here…

Suffice it to say that I just received an e-mail with the agenda for the Writers Festival and noticed a new entry that cuts into one of my classes.  What’s hysterical is the hour and fifteen minutes they’ve alloted to this presentation…

I’m serving on the Festival committee and am wondering if I need hire a couple of guards…

EDUCATION: Why?

Maybe it’s just one of my bad days, or weeks, or months, but I’m about ready to give it up.  Classwork sucks.

REALITY: With Any Luck

I want to live long enough to see this:

Engineers devise invisibility shield by Philip Ball
Electron effects could stop objects from scattering light.

Just think how that changes everything–how it will affect literature by taking invisibility out of the realm of sci fi.
