REALITY?: Being Real

With a brief apology for yesterday’s language, both in my misuse of the word prosaic and my proper use of a four-letter word, I offer nothing other than honesty in feelings and admitting when I’m wrong, fiction where appropriate, and realities of life as seen by me. Spinning often gets marked with my first reaction unless I can manage to hold things together and within until calm.

While there’s much more to this writing thing, it’s a learning process and each word that moves from the mind onto a readable, shareable form is best allowed its freedom when first born. Raising the words to be upstanding, self-sufficient and smart is the loving work of the parental author after the orgasmic conception of the idea and the pains of presenting that new life has been accomplished. If we allow their natural development and guide them gently, they will decide themselves whether to be essays, poetry, fiction or non-fiction when they are ready to stand on their own.

Living is writing, writing is living.

BLOGGING: Affirmation

One of the many benefits of blogging is validation of whatever else you do or say out in the real world. I have just, for example, realized that I have made a complete jackass of myself thinking I know something when I don’t.

Here in Spinning I’ve often used the term “prosaics” meaning a poetic, flowing almost flowery style of writing. Forget the fact that it’s an adjective that I present as a noun—that’s just my tendency to play with words. However, random checking of the dictionary discloses this: It means just the opposite, and either everyone has been too nice to call me on it, or doesn’t read my soliloquies.

Prosaic: of or like prose rather than poetry; often, specifically, heavy, flat, unimaginative, etc. Commonplace, dull and ordinary. (Webster’s New World)

Or maybe that’s exactly what my writing has been and to your minds, it suited the sentence. I am not going back through 966 entries to find the errors, but please, if I should be so obviously incorrect again, would you let me know? I don’t mind being an idiot at times, but once it’s out in space on the internet…

WRITING: When It Comes and What To Do With It

We are fortunate in the weblogging world to have writers willing to share their experience.

From Joe at The Word Foundry, in Fertility (Joe, this is why permalinks are good things!) brings us an entry into the mind of a writer as the idea hits, and where it goes from there.

Joe starts out his post with the idea:

“I don’t know which side you come down on when it comes to the big cosmic accident.

Me, I’ve been thinking it over a lot lately. And I’ve got some questions that I can’t quite answer.”

This, and the short follow-through may end up as a story because he was able to write down what started as “Voice and all, the thing dropped into my head and started festering, stealing a bit from my personal history” on his morning commute. While laptoppers are never caught without their laptops if they’ll be seated and otherwise bored for longer than fifteen minutes, for drivers carrying a voice recorder is a good idea. Many times that opening sentence or line of poetry will stick and actually be edited in the memory process until it gets down on paper or screen, especially if its a good one, but sometimes things get lost if we’re diverted by the intrusion of reality.

So, I guess the lesson here is open mind, open laptop.

BLOGGING: Great Ideas

This is not a new thing of course, but I must say that I love what Rethabile has done with hypertext on his blog, On English. Several words within an entry are highlighted hypertext that give a definition when the cursor is floated on them. Example: “ravishing” is “beautiful (comes from the French ‘ravissante’).

I think this is an excellent format to use, especially for language logs, above and beyond the link process. While many who read these logs are teachers or of like interest, many are learners and interested. This helps us all (of COURSE I know what ravishing means, but now I know its root!)

WRITING: Acquiring the Habits

My former English professor kindly blogged a referral to my blog entry of June 14th, REALITY?: Neighborhoods, which was simply a short essay on a nest of cardinals in a bush (actually a rhododendron, but changed to laurel because the words flowed nicer) outside my window. His remark was, “While (I am) working on a few entries on language and designed space, Spinning hits with this and uses language to create two spheres.”

While I might have preferred my response to reflect that I knew what I was doing when I wrote it, I’m almost as content with knowing that I did it without really thinking about or planning it that way. And that is the real point of this post, which I’ll state with a flourish at the finish.
But first, allow me, for my own benefit as a learning process, relate a brief background of how the writing came about.

Sitting at the computer, hearing the chirping chicks from the nest, I got the thought that the “neighbors were noisy.” I decided to post about it.

Since I started out with the concept of “neighbors” rather than “the cardinals” the writing flowed from that viewpoint, and quickly I realized that this would be a case of tricking the reader into believing that the story was about people rather than birds. Obviously, once I became aware of that, I continued in that vein with the standard format of revelation at the ending.

But I know that I did not consciously plan for two worlds that were interwoven in this manner. I did not think it over and carefully pick words to “create two spheres.” But somehow I managed to do so. Wasn’t I the clever one!

And here’s the purpose of this post (that flourishing finish I promised above): Now I’ve been taught to read stories looking for just such twists and use of language. But it seems that through learning to read in this context, reading as much as you can of the skilled taletellers, and writing regularly, it almost becomes a process of osmosis rather than concentrated effort. What goes in, comes out.

Only wish I were aware of it enough to not need to have it pointed out to me.

Yesterday was our fourteenth wedding anniversary. We celebrated with MacDonald’s rather than the planned lobster. But we’re both alive and okay.

REALITY?: Strong Emotion

I hate almost no one. I have disagreed with, temporarily disliked strongly–very strongly–but have never hated any person with any real passionate hatred in my life. There have been people who may have been mean, rude, unjust, or just plain annoying in my half-century of interaction with other people, but none that I didn’t forget and forgive easily any transgressions. Even evil people I’ve read about, I don’t hate.

Except for Inspector #35.

Inspector #35 may be male or female, of indeterminate age, but does not live in the United States. It tells me so on the bottom of my office chair just below the sticker identifying Inspector #35. This person probably doesn’t hate anybody either, may simply have dozed off that day, or is ignorant, careless, or naturally mean-tempered. He/she may even have meant this as a practical joke. But nothing I recall has ever gotten me to hate someone with such intensity as I hate Inspector #35, the person who pronounced my chair as fit for consumer use and up to all standards and which drives me as insane as would the Chinese water torture. My chair, with no set reason nor timing (except for bad), for no apparent cause nor regular schedule, drops approximately one-quarter of an inch at a time until it has lost four full inches in height to its lowest setting. While I have been typing, it has intermittently dropped five times. It has not done this for several days, perhaps a couple weeks. It is driving me mad.

For this reason alone, I will not have lived my life in love of all people. When I die, I will probably be stopped at the gate for this very reason.

I don’t care. I hate Inspector #35.

REALITY?: Neighborhoods

The neighbors were having quite a row earlier this evening. I think I may have set it off by wandering too close to their yard when watering some parched petunias that couldn’t wait for “possible scattered thunderstorms” to possibly scatter rain to quench their thirst.

The Mrs. started in just as I happened by their side window, and eventually the kids were screaming too. It took a while, and she went over all her complaints that I’d suspected she was feeling. They’d had to move here just this spring because their home had been practically leveled and would take too long to rebuild. The grocery is too far away now, and while they’re further from the traffic, she doesn’t like the closeness of the neighbors with their lights shining in their yard late at night, and sounds of tv’s and supper dishes clanking as if they were right in the next room.

Eventually the kids were fed and quiet and the tirade the Mrs. started seemed to simmer to just a word now and then. And all is well again, and she has regained some sense of peace, her spouse’s gentle words have done the trick. They’ve gone out for the evening and their voices are less insistent, less upset and sounding happy now. They’re sitting in the maple tree in my, er, their, backyard, the Mr.’s unmistakable red feathers glowing even in the falling dusk. Hopefully, happily they’ll return soon to the nest and children in the laurel bush beneath the window of this room.

REALITY?: Subtlety

Every time I sink my head in shame at losing what is left of any fight in me, I clearly see the ground and find that I’m still standing, and my eyes are far above it. Ever more nearsighted as I age, my feet look fuzzy but unmoving, planted firmly somewhere that I can’t recall the journey to, but there I am.

Every day now is a school day, every day a lesson is learned, but then I thought I knew it all at twenty-five. So is the world revealing just a little at a time or is it changing and with the changing, so am I? The daily routine calls and at long last I’ve given in, but discovered that it all can be quickly done and over with if faced head-on. Avoidance was a hiding place that grew with need; accumulated needs that bore the need to run away into a safe and quiet cave where I could think and write and write and think. But doing what is needed isn’t shackling nor overwhelming if done with haste and without hatred. It grants a freedom from itself when need is taken care of. Its weight is lifted and its want erased from the mind to leave it clean for what is more important to consider. Life, death, friendship, despair and hope and fear and love. And words to use in any way I want.

Steadfast, slowly moving onward, trying hard for confidence and settling for comfort. And inner peace.

REALITY?: Masks

This is interesting, and certainly nothing I’m proud of, but I believe I scare people.

My mood of late has undoubtedly been somber, beset by threatening clouds that have hung over my head for months and blocked the few healing rays of sunshine that human beings can find to brighten up even the most troubling events. But I am not normally a jovial person anyway, so I wouldn’t have thought that not smiling through a framing session would be revealing. A couple customers have reluctantly admitted that they didn’t call about their work being ready because they didn’t want to rush or bother me. This is not acceptable in a professional atmosphere.

Hiding is hard, but preferable to making people uneasy, so I’ll necessarily work on my shell of outer self and reconstruct a bit. I’ve never felt intimidating in my life, yet I have been told that I am strong in relationships, often too strong for lovers who have gone their way long ago. I’ve always been amazed by this perception, thought a bit about it and not being able to reconcile it with my own, gave it up from further introspection.

Me? Scary?

CURRENT AFFAIRS: The Ugly American

Two posts today at different sites have stuck in my mind, sized each other up, talked a bit, and ended up on the same side once they’d traveled the furrows of my brain.

On J-Walk, an entry about the newly published “Citizenship for Dummies” Book, which prompted my comment to the effect that both the far left and the far right would benefit from a reading.

And, in the New York Times (as well as everywhere else, I’m sure), this headline: “8 Justices Block Effort to Excise Phrase in Pledge” and article by Linda Greenhouse whereby “An inconclusive decision by the Supreme Court on Monday left “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance while keeping the issue alive for possible resolution in a future case. All eight justices who took part in the case agreed that the federal appeals court in California ruled incorrectly last year when it held, in a lawsuit brought against a local school district by the atheist father of a kindergarten student, that the reference to God turned the daily recitation of the pledge into a religious exercise that violated the separation of church and state.”

Has the whole world gone crazy? I just cannot comprehend why minority groups—and I’m not talking ethnic or racial here, but any and all groups that feel they cannot go along with the laws of a particular country for one reason or another, or feel that there aren’t enough two-headed purple men representing the two-headed purple people in the country—feel that the laws of the country must be changed to accommodate them.

Isn’t the basis of a democracy the voice of the people, meaning that the majority rules? While we allow it to be challenged, isn’t it counter-effective when it is stripped of the majority voice? No one has ever been arrested for refusing to say the words, “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. Wouldn’t it make sense to have the minority agree to this simple refusal to say the two words, rather than to rewrite history and policy the way THEY want it to be?

Amazingly, the next words after “one nation, under God,” (or not) are, “indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

I’m tired of our nation having to cater to the whiners, and self-serving minority.

UPDATE: Since I guess I was raised on the “under God” version, I did not realize that it was added in. But my feelings still hold true. It should never have been changed by pressure from another minority group at the time.

REALITY?: Emotion

vole

I am consciously focusing all my frustration, anger and feelings of despair upon this animal, the vole. The shotgunning of emotion was ineffective on every target at which I aimed. This will centralize it harmlessly, and thus diffuse it. My enemy is the vole.

STORIES: The Waiting

The better part of June is over. There is change and sorrow in the air. He is prepared and waits with shallow breathing calm to meet the winds that blow the time a little bit beyond that of human understanding and acceptance. The natural rhythm of life that is so defined and yet incomprehensible nears and with the stored knowledge, memory and resolve he will be patient. To know the enemy, he has learned, is half the battle won.

REALITY?: Inner Nature

Standing outside just now, in a summer night’s dusk under a gathering storm of running clouds, I felt it creep back in. I wanted to howl with the wind.
