REALITY: To Do’s

Got a lot done today, much more to do tomorrow.  Need to apply for a passport–heard it takes a while, and the government gets involved, although I’m not sure why the FBI cares if you’re leaving the country; it seems more important to check out who’s coming in…

REALITY: Sunday Sundries

One of those days that needs a map to get around the story.  Pinpoints mark the spots where time is spent between the dawn and dark.  Replacing hard drive, adding memory to the kid’s machine; quarterly sales tax, year-end books for the shop; all the major bills written out and mailed, and while I’m out, grapefruit juice and rolls and sandwich meat for tomorrow.  Read up on history to prepare for Tuesday, relax with reading for myself between the laundry loads.  Maybe, if I can face it, do some gaming.  In the meantime, the classic "War of the Worlds" is on tv.  Uncle Matthew the priest is just about to get himself fried.

REALITY: Writing

Well this sucks.  I’m really really antsy writing thoughts that pass on through, and I don’t know where to place them any more.

I’ve written several out and then deleted; a bit too personal for my classroom journal, but then I’ve vowed to not undress here any more.  Just for bandwidth I’ve eliminated other weblogs; it would  be rare that I would enter there at all.  but something’s welling up inside–I’ve felt it since mid week, but where to put it, where to hide it and even now I’m sounding a bit unbalanced to myself.

It seems that when I’m given the permission to be free, the duty via writing courses that I probably take for just this reason, the stranger things come racing to the forefront; the mellow childhood memories trampled by their hooves.

Or maybe it’s just the caffeine, nicotine and chocolate.

BLOGGING:

Via Brandywine Books, John of Rabe Ramblings on blogging:

Everywhere I turn on the Internet, more and more blogs are filled with more and more angst-filled posts about how blogging relates to the rest of some blogger’s daily life, whether or not they should continue, the existential import of all of it, blogging goals for the future, why someone is not going to be able to post anything for the next 4 1/2 hours, who’s ranked where in the blog "ecosystem," and the future posts someone is planning deep within the recesses of his/her mind for which we are presumably to wait by the computer with anxious anticipation until this veritable cybergold flows from brain to keyboard to internet ether.

I think this is what makes me wonder.  It’s not a unique opinion, it’s something that’s been tossed out there and yes, we worry we’re boring and nobody reads us, and why bother when in truth, while we claim to be ourselves or spout our semi-intellectual opinions, there are only a couple people in the millions out there who really give a rat’s ass what we say.

When we put it out there that we’re going to quit, we’re asking that you beg us to stay put.    I don’t worry much if no one reads me, I’m hurt though when they read and quickly sneak away without a sign.  I think the few who were such wonderful writers, so giving of themselves and entertaining, who since have stopped the habit were those who went in style and grace.  No whining, just a well-thought out and firm goodbye.

I don’t know.  I don’t know.

WRITING: Introspection

It seems I want what I have sadly little talent for.  And while I press on to learn the new, the varied forms of narrative to find something I can settle into, I’m only shoveling out more paths that lead to nowhere.  The shoveling is hard work, the learning of new means and methods to tell story.  The program tools that are beyond my level of sophistication in my writing make it a trying of my talents, skills and limits.  Maybe it’s all just window dressing and a sham; maybe you just can’t make, they say, a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

BLOGGING: Voice

I feel dispensed among the weblogs; scurry like a spider darting here and there.  What looked at Spinning to be a multiple personality disorder, or an effort by a group is slowly being separated and doled out.

The class work cannot show the doubting side of me.  And even here I’ve hidden just a few.  There are so many other voices out there ringing clear and true, but I haven’t yet been strong in any one.  I wonder if I’ll weaken further if my own are held apart, walled from each other by a coded cage of html.  Maybe indeed I am a group, and so the conflict and the moods.

I wanted to grow up mysterious; I grew up confused instead.

WRITING: Poetry

I have arisen with the same discontent I pulled in with me under last night’s covers.  A sad sense of knowing that a yearning is ever out of reach.  It seems the more I rail against the poetry I read that is read and wonderfully accepted by the periodicals and anthologies of just the past few years, the further away I seem to be in mind.

I want them to be perfect.  I need them as a light to shine the way.  And so I pick my way among them, find a nugget here and there but mostly rock.  My tales are not of struggles of the masses of oppressed, or dreamlike images of a pretty foreign land.  My footsteps follow those that have long settled neath the earth, covered, like the sheets above my head.

Poetry has taken on a torch I want to hold, and yet my words are more likely to be crisped by flame.  What am I seeking, why do I fight, or is it something that I shall never comprehend?  At least I must know this and look up to the light to see more clearly what I am and what I’m not.

REALITY: Change

Change is okay, change is good, they say.  But sometimes it’s not so good for everybody.

This is a relatively small town, with Ron’s Agway’s, Susan the framer, and Ray’s at Village Food Mart.  I go into town hall and everyone knows me.  I beep and wave at several neighbors passing on the road every day.  Saw the trash man uptown at Ron’s the other day, and we stopped and talked a bit.  I go to Ray’s for little things almost every day, sandwich meat, fresh Harvest Bakery delivered  rolls an bread, the best chuck roasts and homemade sausage.  It’s been part of my life for almost fifteen years.  My brother-in-law owns the Dunkin Donuts across the road, and Cumberland Farms is next door to Ray’s.

The faces at Cumberland Farms change regularly and though I go for gas there every week, it’s rare to get the same cashier.  Today Sharon, Ray’s wife, told me they’ve sold out to Cumberland Farms.

I couldn’t help it; I teared up.  Sharon thought it was because she didn’t have my brand of cigarettes, though she promised that if the delivery came in before she left, she’d drop them off when she came by my house later in the school bus.

I don’t think Cumberland Farms delivers.

WRITING: Getting Serious

I’m back working on a story I wrote a while ago, still trying to get past a certain point and build up to a climax.  But now I’m beginning to wonder if it’s already taken too long to get there.

Told in the first person, a woman’s relating of her day and bits of her life are primarily a character study; that is, if the woman herself is interesting enough.  While I think I may have given a good idea of where her head is at by her thoughts and interaction with her family, it may still be too boring without the addition of some more mini-dramas or incidents that build up to a climax and resolution of sorts.  What I had originally written was dull, an ending unworthy of the buildup of interest, if not action.  While I still can pick out words and phrases that work better here and there, I’m coming to the same point without enough momentum to bring it to a confrontation and a close.

The voice itself may be a problem; it is one of resignation and subtle control.  It is lacking self-confidence, yet is completely in charge of the environment in which the characters live.  It seems too laid back, I’m beginning to suspect, except in its own assumptions, to get worked up to a major conflict.  There may need to be more tension in the beginning.  This is one problem with first person point of view and trying to establish a strong first person viewpoint while at the same time, eventually showing that that viewpoint is mistaken.

Hmmm.  Gotta put more time into understanding this lady, and finding out the best way to give her what she needs, and the opportunity to face it.

REALITY: Seeking Sympathy

Yes, I do complain a lot about the minor aggravations in life, but am fairly stoic about the biggies.  My family has always been of the type to be shattered by the shards; rocks in crises.

But let me throw this out:  This morning, after wrestling with the old barn sliding door to get it open, having it hop off the track several times and having to lift it from the bottom to get it back on to roll, I got into my shop to find that I was able to make snow cones on the top of the coffeemaker.  Really.  The water froze in stalagmites as I tried to pour it in the grate on top, making that soft, slushy ice that screamed for cherry syrup.

And this is with leaving the propane stove on overnight.

And this is where I must work today.

WRITING: What it can be

There’s never been any question but that besides being informational, story is a form of entertainment.  Books, movies, television, games; all a world where we can, in one manner or another, read ourselves into a different place and time than we take for our present existence.

Do we magnanimously write then for the pleasure of others?  To entertain them?  To gain for ourselves some small amount of compensation in glory or in coin?  Yeah, mostly, especially if self-satisfaction comes under the glory heading.

But wait!  That’s not all!  For no additional cost, we’ll send you on an all-expense paid week or month or year in another world as well!

Fun to enjoy another’s choice of where you want to linger over pages or a screen for a little while.  More fun, I think, to pick and choose, and write your mental trip yourself.  From sunny days of sparkling snowy fields and old stone walls that smile beneath their winter hats, to Mars and New Atlantis and the freedom born of short story where you don’t even have to waste the time to sleep or go to work.

For me, that’s what my writing is about, but need I justify?

EDUCATION: The Thrill is Gone

The end of the journey is in sight–or at least the third leg of it.

Finally got in under the wire to file for graduation in May.  Braved the cold this morning to run around campus flinging forms, money and hellos to ensure a spot in the capped and gowned lines.  Whether I’ll actually attend the graduation ceremoney (whoops–Freudian slip here; it’s the Republican in me) is still up in the air; I’d feel as if I were cheating, knowing I still had to take one last required course in the summer session, but Jim is sort of pushing me to go through with the pomp and circumstance scene.   And my sister is threatening to bring the whole crew to watch.  Only wish my mom and dad could be there.

WRITING: Participation

When the left side whispers to the right, "why bother?" it wonders, why, indeed, at all?

PEOPLE: Willie

I suppose I should add this under new media as well–Willie Nelson’s brand newly updated website is more interactive than ever.

Although personally I can think of some things I’d add…

REALITY: The Scream

It’s been so long–I can’t remember when, so very long.  But this time, I gave the pain a voice.  Frozen fingers hurt more intensely as they thaw.  For five full minutes, maybe more, I screamed as loudly as the pain within me deepened and involved my inner self down to my soul.  I huddled, crouched down on the floor, regardless of the water running full force from the faucet.  Warm, it had burned me and I howled.  Wrapped in towels, my hands sought warmth from my own body, softer, kinder between my thighs.  I knelt and rocked and moaned until the feeling ebbed before the feeling could return.
