NEW MEDIA: Earth and Mars

So okay, I already re-drew Mars 121206nm and I’m working on Earth.

Since Earth is largely water, I started with a blue ball.  Which must be right because Waylon sings:

I live on a big blue ball
I never do dream I may fall
But even the day that I do
I jump off and smile back at you.121206nm2

I don’t even know where we are
But they tell us we’re circling a star
Well, I’ll take their word I don’t know
But I’m dizzy so maybe that’s so.

a.k.a The Executioner’s Song
(Jesse Winchester)

Now all I have to do is throw in some continents, polar ice caps, cloud cover, the greenhouse effect, and give it some “spin.”

Sort of neat to create my own Earth.  It’s obviously a bit lumpy (just where is that circle maker in Photoshop?) but I’ll smooth it out with really nice people living on it.  Rather than starting with apes who as everyone knows, just look out for themselves, I’ll make the entire world population good and kind and honest.  Maybe I’ll make the oceans smaller and the land masses bigger so that the folk aren’t as separated by the island effect.  I’ll make it maybe, like say, a day’s ride on the ferry from land to land.  I’m sure they’ll be nicer to each other if they feel more connected.  They can visit each other and get along better; maybe share recipes and leafblowers and stuff.

Let’s see how long they can stay that way.

REALITY?: Coincidence and Fate

Odd day today.  Saw a pair of eagles at the fish hatchery this morning.  Just sitting on the old dead tree above the stream.  Fishin’ I suppose.  Then this evening saw a hawk swoop through the yard, dinner clutched dark and lifeless in his talons.

My neighbor just gave me the name of a recommended lawyer.  The Associate name is Peter Clark Agency.  My Dad’s name was Peter.  He lived on Clark Avenue.

Went down to sign papers on the closing sale of my father-in-law’s house.  Five months, and all is smoothly and fairly settled.  My Dad’s house is still held in the clutches of a greedy sibling going on three years.  More sadness, my brother-in-law’s mother died today.  Blessing, yes, but she should have had just a bit more time.  There’s been too much death in this family lately.  We all need some respite from the grief.

TECHNOLOGY & NEW MEDIA: Costs $$$

Okay so I gave in to the need (desire) for a camcorder but did some homework and found a slightly better one for about the same dollar amount.  I figure I’ll be doing some playing around in new media after the holidays since I tend to slow down in the frameshop after I’ve collapsed on Christmas Eve.  I tell customers that I’m sort of “closed for inventory” unless something is really needed.  Then I show them the boxes of nails and screws to count.  They believe me.

But then, just when I was ready to tell el esposo not to buy me anything for Christmas because of the camcorder, I bought myself something else:  a fax machine.  After waiting a month to get info from my lawyer through the mail, and sick of him asking me if I have a fax, I decided not to give him any more excuses.

Well the camcorder is definitely for my new media work, but I’ve already started drawing to replace the ‘borrowed’ photo images in Recycling.

SELF ANALYSIS: Spot on…for now.

Couldn’t resist taking it, though I’ve tried to stay away from these "You are the…" quizzes.  But sometimes they just seem to catch things that are going on with me that even friends may miss.  On this one, I hesitated after answering "Friends and Family" as the most important thing to me.  I changed my answer to the more realistic "Truth."  After all, it was Truth, you see, that lost my family to me.

You are The Tower

Ambition, fighting, war, courage. Destruction, danger, fall, ruin.

The Tower represents war, destruction, but also spiritual renewal. Plans are disrupted. Your views and ideas will change as a result.

The Tower is a card about war, a war between the structures of lies and the lightning flash of truth. The Tower stands for "false concepts and institutions that we take for real." You have been shaken up; blinded by a shocking revelation. It sometimes takes that to see a truth that one refuses to see. Or to bring down beliefs that are so well constructed. What’s most important to remember is that the tearing down of this structure, however painful, makes room for something new to be built.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

Thanks to Furious Spinner for the sobering experience.

LITERATURE: On The Road – The Times, They Ain’t Changed Much

So our narrator Sal, curious and bit jealous of the closeness between his friends Dean and Carlos, listens in on one of their special late night meetings of the minds:

They started in again. ‘When you borrowed that nickel to make up the check for the chicken-fried steaks–‘

‘No, man the chili!  Remember, the Texas Star?’

‘I was mixing it with Tuesday.  When you borrowed that nickel you said, now listen, you said, "Carlo, this is the last time I’ll impose on you," as if, and really, you meant that I had agreed with you about no more imposing.’

‘No, no, no, I didn’t mean that–you harken back now if you will, my dear fellow, to the night Marylou was crying in the room, and when, turning to you and indicating by my extra added sincerity of tone which we both knew was contrived but had its intention, that is, by my play-acting I showed that–But wait, that isn’t it.’  (p. 49)

Now this is very realistic, and makes about as much sense as any pot-induced heavy discussion I’ve been amused by in the past.  I recall one hour-long conversation between two friends, complete with giggling, about a pencil eraser. I don’t believe it was settled before they upped and headed for the fridge.

NEW MEDIA: Let there be music!

Oooh, oooh, oooh!  In my next production, I wanted background music (even if to offset the sound of my voice).  But again, in striving for all original–and yes, I’m going back to draw Mars, Earth, a Tunnel, Edgar, and Jesus for Recycling–I was stymied by both lyrics, sound, and all that copyright stuff.  And even though it might bring Willie to me in a fit of righteous rage, more likely he’d just send his lawyers and Lord knows I don’t need to deal with any more of them.

So, I hummed.  With the poem set out in front of me, Sound Recorder at the ready, mic in place, I hummed as I read the lines silently in my mind.  So you hum a little faster for the dramatic action parts, and slowly for the dramatic meaningful ones, and lower or higher according to mood.  No particular tune, just humming–though I’m sure parts are similar to others in my head.

Unfortunately, I may still need the assistance of the Echo effect.

POETRY: A poem–

–one that I’ve tweaked a bit and that I may decide to have a go at in Flash, or at the very least, Movie Maker again just ’cause it’s fun to do:

Asleep in the Streets

Clouds in sheets drift above

the streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant,

slower than the M.E. draws the

reddening tarp over the head

of a small black boy.

Only eight

and in the way.

He was at play–

the game of kickball

with his friends was never meant

to end without a winner.

Silver spinning bike wheels,

red streamers sailing

in a wake of banded ones.

Tried and true

blood brothers more than

curly hair and dark liquid eyes

could ever call them same,

find their names

written on the peeling paint

of hallways where their mamas cry

daily, out of habit.

Mottled mortar clouds

creep along graffitied walls,

block by block pursuing

more young savvy dudes;

taller, swift and quiet as

the hawks that soar above

Bed-Sty streets.

On faster feet they run,

yet never quick enough

to leap beyond, rise over, reach up

for the sky and fly away.

TECHNOLOGY: Working Parts

Well I finally got the printer working because I was able to spend some time on uninstalling all the software from both computers and reinstalling from scratch.  Even that wasn’t easy; it insisted that it needed a file called hpzm309.dll which didn’t exist anywhere–even on the installation CD.  I somehow convinced it that it doesn’t need it.  In the meantime, I found another printer kicking around in the shop–a brand new freebie (so not a great one) that came with a digital camera purchase.

I haven’t solved the DVD/Windows Media Player problem yet.  It was working just fine until the presentation on A Clockwork Orange Wednesday night.  It works fine still with all other videos from the file, so I’m wondering if the DVD itself somehow is causing the problem; maybe the resolution of the monitor?  There seems to be a workaround in the Microsoft KB, but it doesn’t work for me.  Oh well, I love these computer problems because they do involve focus and I’m an obsessive by nature.

I’m really tempted to buy yet another computer.  It’s available through my husband’s company–the cast-offs when they upgrade–and for $132, it’s got a 1.8 Gig Pentium CPU, a 20 Gig hard drive, 512 Meg memory, network, sound and audio cards, though no O/S.  If it uses the same memory form as one or the other of my lower-grade setups, I may go for it.

Did break down and buy a laptop cooler, and it seems to be working well.  It keeps the laptop from getting too hot and sluggish and in the summer at least, it will keep my lap the same.  Right now, I sort of like the heat on these cold winter nights.  In the shop, it’s cold enough to prevent any problems, though I do have the laptop sitting atop two frame corner samples that lift it neatly about two inches off the desk.

In the meantime, I’m looking for a reasonably priced camcorder.  Doesn’t need to be top quality, but good enough to work with for artistic purposes.  I’ve seen one that is oh-so-readily-easy to buy at the CVS photo counter, but it’s still $99, and a no-name product.  Usually I get all my parts from Tiger Direct and have been a faithful customer for years both because of their prices and service as well as the availability of product and information on the site. Their cheapest doesn’t seem to do what I’d like, though, and the next step up is a bit more than I want to spend.  We’ll see if I’m still affected by impulse buying and come home with the camera along with the drugs from my next pharmacy visit.

So that’s the news here in the technological side of susan.  If you were bored out of your skull, you’ll have to wait a bit until after the holidays when I get into furniture recovering, drapery making, and knitting.  The literary and writing facets of my personality are, of course, always on tap.

LITERATURE: On The Road – Style

I keep waiting for something to grab me in my reading, but seem instead to be just bopping along the road with Kerouac’s Sal Paradise.  The truck ride was fun, and I saw some depth developing to the characters:

Meanwhile the blond young fugitive sat the same way; every now and then Gene leaned out of his Buddhistic trance over the rushing dark plains and said something tenderly in the boy’s ear.  The boy nodded.  Gene was taking care of him, of his moods and his fears.  I wondered where the hell they would go and what they would do.  They had no cigarettes.  I squandered my pack on them, I loved them so.  They were grateful and gracious.  They never asked, I kept offering.  Montana Slim had his own but never passed the pack.  (p. 32)

It’s a very simple, journalistic style of story and yet choice of words is what makes it warm.  "Gene was taking care of him, of his moods and his fears."  No wasted words here, yet we’re made aware of a special fatherly relationship an experienced hitchhiker has with a young, scared runaway boy.  There is the narrator’s awareness of it and it reaches into him, "I loved them so."  Of course Sal is quite drunk, as are they all on a good part of this ride on a flatbed.  But where you might have expected Kerouac to describe the scenery from New York to Denver, we see the character changing instead of the landscape.

Simply done, and something the reader is not bombarded with but gets into and rolls along with the story without realizing fully how gradually he is becoming involved.

NEW MEDIA, WRITING & REALITY?: Yeah, all three.

Well, one presentation out of two worked last night at the writers meeting.  I’d done another dry-run check through of the Clockwork Orange show of parts of the film as compared to an audio/text excerpt from the book, but the movie wouldn’t come up in any of the players at the meeting.  To top things off, I was discombobulated by the appearance of my screen which was changed in resolution so that things weren’t always visible, and never where I’m used to them being.  Time was getting short so we abandoned the effort.

Back home it took just a minute to get my video display back in shape and later today I’ll check the Media Player problem and make myself remember how to fix it just for future knowledge.  This morning my home computer crashed with a flourish and that took just a short while to check all plugs and do a little dance to revive it.  Then the cable went out.  This too took some patience and magic mumblings and a bit more time but that’s fixed too.  Now I just have the printer to contend with.

There’s been a lack of interest in the membership of the writers group lately, though I’m surprised and happy to say that it’s been in existence for three years now.  I thought maybe we’d just run out of words, but the inclusion of audio/visual into the story space didn’t pull back any more interest.

Maybe everything just needs to run its course and the group as an entity has reached the yellow ribbon.  Even I’m often tempted to just hang out in Textland, but the fooling around in other areas has me hooked enough to keep exploring.  Writing has traditionally been a solitary experience, and multimedia makes it a team effort (though you can do it alone, the expertise of each area is what will produce the best result), I can’t help but yearn for the eras of small writing communities of friends that fed and fed off of each others’ ideas to produce such astonishing experiments in just the pen and paper method of story alone.

Time moves on though, and so must I.  Even as the horizon draws near, I hurry.

NEW MEDIA: Learning

Boy, my finger’s been shaking over that "buy" button for a year’s subscription for an online course on Macromedia Flash et al direct at Adobe’s site.

But then I have to look at what I already have available, and I have a couple books and sites and the tutorials and help index that comes with the programs.  I think I need more of a push than a self-paced course.  I need an instructor to question.  One who will stand over me screaming at me to quit being lazy and buckle down and just do it.

Preferably, young and hunky.

LITERATURE: Excuses

Haven’t been reading as religiously as usual.  New Media playing..er, I mean working…and the Christmas rush with framing in the shop have put some serious dents in my scheduled relaxing reading time.  Also, I suppose, the hibernation syndrome.

Every year around October, November, depending on the weather, my internal clock goes a bit screwy and my sleep pattern is warped around to no particular routine.  If I can avoid watching TV unless I’m doing something on the computer, I could easily fall asleep on the couch by 7 pm.  Of course, I’ll wake at midnight, stay up till three, and sneak into bed.  I also tend to eat more around this time of year, as if to put on a layer of fat to hold me through the winter’s nap.  Truly, I believe I’m a throwback to a more natural time in earth’s history when nine to five meant absolutely nothing and winters without the benefit of fur were spent huddled in an underground cave (I do put the blankets over my head).

So my reading is progressing at a couple pages a day at the most, though I hope to allot more time now that I’m aware of what’s happening.

REALITY?: Season of…

Just a few thoughts on what has me in the frame of mind to withdraw from folks rather than to reach out and embrace them in this season of love and joy:

A lawyer who has taken a full month to answer two simple questions, regardless of the fact that this has already dragged on for two and a half years.

A customer who hasn’t been to the shop but once in eighteen years expecting me to offer credit when he tells me he has no money to have something framed.

Another customer who has had three pieces sitting here for three years–in fact denying that she did when I’ve called her–finally coming in with her husband to pickup and pay.  Her excuse:  "I don’t like to part with money."

Daily phone calls from some solicitor for web-building from India.

A telephone solicitor opening with: "I just want to doublecheck your listing here as correct for the Internet Yellow Pages before I send out the invoice."  I told him what he got wrong was that I had incurred any charges.

An estate attorney who for the very first time asked me to approve a charge of $1750 for a septic inspection without telling me that they’d gotten an estimate to hook in a sewer line for $32,000 to a single house.  The septic system, by the way, has never been proven to have failed, and it’s impossible to check it now because the water line’s been disconnected.

Finding out the stone in your high school ring is a fake.  Finding out the aquamarine in a childhood ring your parents gave you is a fake (unbeknownst to them, I’m sure).

A jeweler telling me that to fix a broken prong on a ring, I’d have to buy a new emerald at a cost of anywhere from $100 to $300 because they’d likely break the stone when they remove it to fix the prong.

Now these are little things, I grant you.  Especially in view of what I’ve lost the years before: three much-loved parents, two dear, dear friends, the  relationship of my sister, the spouse being without a job for nine months.  But as I lose the good things, it’s become very, very hard to fill the void they leave.  I’m content with what I have and don’t need more; I’d just like to hang onto the peace to last me through a comfortable lifetime.

REALITY?: Otherworldly

I was happily surprised to see no snow this morning, a five a.m. moon fat and orange sitting on the horizon of the western treeline.  Luck was with me: I didn’t have to leave at 5:30 to bring a friend into Hartford to St. Francis for ambulatory surgery.  It dawned clear and sunny and at nine he came.  Still no snow; I wouldn’t have to sit and wait for him until early afternoon.  Too, a neighbor of his had offered to bring him back here.

But with only three hours of sleep last night, I curled up on the couch at noon.  At four p.m. I woke, confused.  All right, it’s four o’clock–morning?  evening?  That settled, the next question was what day it was.  Then it all came back.  His car’s still sitting in the driveway–did I miss his call saying his neighbor didn’t show?  No messages.

So where is Ronnie?
