TECHNOLOGY: Computer Shopping

I have now spent more time and cost in printing out laptop specs than for anything I’ve ever purchased before.

I have mainly stuck with four brands, two processors, a minimum ram memory, O/S, screen width, graphics card, DVD/CD RW burner, 19mm between keys, and 60 mg hard drive, and I’ve still got about a dozen possibilities.  Oh for the good old days of a Ford or a Chevy.  Or maybe not.

I used to build my pc’s, so it wasn’t that difficult to get exactly what I wanted.  This has to be about a year or more in advance of what I need, and the model has to be capable of having guts comprised of certain specifications.  T’ain’t easy.

Normally I’m an impulsive shopper.  But that’s only when something’s sitting in front of me all decked out and on sale.  When I need to think about a purchase, it’s a painfully slow process.

Here’s hoping the decision is made by this weekend or sooner.

REALITY: In Words on Woods

There was a deep suspicion of what the notices would say; a big red flyer tacked to the tree across the street.  But I put off finding reason to go read it, knowing that at least with no photo showing it was not a missing child or something else that should break somebody’s heart.

At last I wandered over, after picking up my mail and read the bold black words that government could only print.  An order of execution, the prisoner wearing it around his neck as if a scarlet letter, damned to more finality, damned to sawdust within five days.

This stately maple in my neighbor’s yard is one of two left standing, when it’s wayward brothers have since been severed from the earth.  Six or seven, maybe more in all, taking up a growing space over time in a hundred years or more, now gone and leaving empty space behind.

When we moved in over fourteen years ago, we were embarrassed by the size of our little five all in a row.  Now they tower, lift up in pride, no longer the new kids on the block, but then again, nor are we.

NEW MEDIA & REALITY: Forking Paths

How different then, are memories from our fantasies, or can they all be considered of the same caliber but different levels in the past.  Once over, they each are just as real because they do not exist in present time at all.

Close your eyes and conjure up a dream world.  Then move along a path you think you’ve walked.  One’s no more valuable or retrievable than the other, and either can be used to pave the future into present into past.

What then, if we sit and dream our lives away, what is the danger?  None that I can see unless we need to prove our lives to others, and that is not a necessary thing.  Five minutes ago I sat here at the keyboard thinking.  Five minutes ago I also climbed a castle’s stairs.  Here are the forking paths we take when we don’t take them all, but very often it is possible that we can simultaneously wander two at once.

I have known people who claim to never have fantasies or daydreams–I weep for them.  But even if one cannot create another world within the mind, there are the interactive video games we play that give us the opportunity to at the very least control a likeable place and time created by someone else.  Are we the physical being with mouse in hand and eyes glued to the screen?  Or are we Kate Walker in Syberia?  Or, are we both at once just walking in parallel worlds.

NEW MEDIA & REALITY: Cubicle Man III

Somehow he knew it’d be his last great golden moment.  With an engineer’s precision he measured out the lemon pepper into his ginger ale.  It didn’t fizzle up as he’d expected, but the flecks of black spice floated on the surface, clinging to the lip of glass, his own glass lips as he sipped it down.  Small pleasures taken in the strange discovery of invention, the first to plunge the meat into the flame.

It was a small thing certainly; and only one someone else did try it but it was enough, in times like these, to set him apart in his own mind.  And so, though he disliked the subtle flavor it became his own, and purposely would gently place his cup on top of trash, black pepper stubbornly writing out his name inside the rim.  He would see it there and smile.  It was all the legacy he was allowed.

REALITY & WRITING: Transitioning

I think I need to get back in touch with the darker side of me…

You know, the one that laughs at pratfalls and people walking into poles.  Okay, a little deeper then, the one who plays with minds as toys.  Remembering how to move with words and the flash effect of eyes on souls, and yes, the inner conflicts that instead of worrying, can be enjoyed.  Used to shade reality, to block the sun from shining and revealing the fool’s gold to the fool.  Innocent, it is, and pure; as whitest white or more precisely, blackest black can only be.

Just a mood and movement while the tools were used for carving out a fairy tale, but that’s for amateurs and sniffling happy endings.

Edgar raps within his crypt, or is that just applause?

Fade to black…

(Note:  Yes, I’m going weird again.  Don’t worry though–it’ll be fun!)

WRITING: Morning Muse

My morning muse is hiking through the convolutions of my brain, but with a strange message even I don’t understand…

There was a time when Jim and me

Used to talk more openly

Giggling as we chased each other’s flashlights on tent walls,

Ignoring calls and flashing lights from porches

manned by mothers.

But secrets always were in whispers

and over time just grew intense

and sobering with the changes in their life or death decisions.

REALITY & NEW MEDIA: Good Stuff

Lotsa stuff to talk about; like finishing Scott McCloud’s "Understanding Comics," which honest, like everything else in this course it seems to cover all forms of narrative and creativity, as well as life itself; watched "Pulp Fiction" finally all the way through; saw bits and pieces of "Apocalypse Now" which I saw when it first came out years ago, and recently bought the video (50 cents at the library sale) but never got to sit and watch, but it was on last night while I was doing stats classwork; ideas chasing each other in my brain about an a/v animation piece I’d like to start structuring (that’s what happens when you get all the elements involved–they chase each other to settle in somewhere rather than just being concerned with words coming out and onto a monitor); and a new flirtation with video games like "Syberia" which was shown in class this morning.

But for now, I have to take some time really seriously deciding between laptops.  The sooner I get one, the sooner I’ll go off the deep end into colors, shapes, texts that speak, and maybe, creating moving forms as well…

Obviously, out of the depths of hell I’m up and flying high with no more damage than singed wings.

EDUCATION: Redeeming Values

Oh joy of joy!  Oh lamb of great god Tunxis!

There will be an opportunity to redeem my withering soul in Statistics via an extra credit project!  It’s an educational form of Catholic penance, I would say; the extra rosary beads we mumble over when we come from the confessional to walk out the arched doors fully cleansed and glowing white once more.

Did that a lot as a kid, and particularly so as a curious teenager.  (The confessional and resultant rosary thing–not the extra credit tests.)

NEW MEDIA: Conflicting Time & Space

Time does not always move in a gentle flow towards future, but often rides a bumpy road of perceived expectations.  And time, the space in which it lives and rolls ahead contains a myriad of possibilities that may (or may not) happen simultaneously…or not.  The present is a whirlwind of nows that happen in machine gun rapid firing (and as bullets, are lost within a target aimed in hit and miss); the past is changed by memory and desire.  But the future in particular is only up for guessing, and the time within its opportunity is changed the most by our perception of its values in our minds.

The best example I can give of this phenomenon, I suppose, is one that caused the thoughts to circulate at all:  There are only four more weeks of Statistics classes!  There are only four more weeks of New Media

REALITY: Sidestreets and Strawberry Shortcuts

Odd, following a list to prove I’m organized.  More, I think, to get things done.  The mind, when left to its own devices, tends to watch the movies that it loves the best and so a map proves at the very least, intention.

But picking up a text on Algebra, to merely look up and confirm a single thought, the lure is there and numbers call with voices that are graphite in response and tempt me with their neatness and decision.  Not now, I say, I’m anxious to move onward; a path I’ve marked out with keyframes of song and words and images drawn by hand from lines that twist and move into a form I can’t deny.

There is a story to the numbers, true enough.  But the ending always must come out the same.  Ah, but the story that revolves in circles, angles, rods and cones, is moving toward an end that has no end, and in that alone is more inviting.

The book is shut but left for but another day.

REALITY: To Do List

The day is led off by a letter to the dean, to seek assistance in remaining on the path I’ve picked for now, to beg for tolerant consideration of a student’s indecisive wandering ways.

Then on to folding laundry, paling pink from one red placemat that gave its all to share its color with its friends; unfortunately, J’s tees and jockeys.  Why is it that this color, so loose with morals and hiding in the pile, then clings so steadfastly to its new homes?

Numbers, numbers, numbers for another quiz and project.  But these numbers are dependable and aim to cleave themselves to brain cells in my head.

Then, at last, the creativity that balled up deep and sleeping can be nudged, awakened, and alive.

REALITY: Metaphorical Snow

Snow may be a blanket, one that covers a sleeping earth.

But the early snow lays a rug upon an earth still in the midst of autumn.  It covers the dust of leaves that lay littering the floor, hangs fresh curtains from the trees, lays a tablecloth on every roof and white runners on the sidewalks.

The audio is silent for the opening of morning–no birdsong background twittering to distract.  But then a rumble rises in crescendo of a sound to build and emphasize the conflict of a change.  Then as it fades away again into another quiet scene, it’s surely changed the story and the roads are black once more.

Layers of new media are starkly seen in nature at times like this.

NEW MEDIA & REALITY: T&S

You want evidence of time and space?

Forty-five minutes away from me there is no snow.  Here it is winter; there it is fall.  But it is happening simultaneously as well.

I know this for fact–even though the man who would have told me is no longer there at all.

EDUCATION & REALITY: Moh’s Scale

We’ve heard, of course, both predictions:  Mellowed by age, vs. The same, only more so.  But what does happen to our personality as we get older, accumulate more experience and knowledge, burn our fingers on the matches of life?

Personally, I tend to believe that even as we grow and patience and tolerance levels allow us (as well as others) greater freedom, and even though we can learn to overcome tendencies and flaws, there is something within us that clings to who we are and when challenged, rises up in protective shields around us.

For example, my own personal quirk about not following directions, but rather seeking to unlock the doors myself.  This often leads to different conclusions or deadends while taking twice the time to get there.  This is fine, of course; it’s part of the whole and the method by which lessons learned are then retained and implemented for certain individuals.  The kink in the theory, however, is that while my own strange way of looking at the world may be fine in fiction or philosophy, it doesn’t near find a success rate in the mathematics field of study.

Okay, simply put, my version of what a poem or painting may be saying is well allowed (encouraged, even) within the norms.  But when faced with statistical facts, why am I still the only one who draws an opposite conclusion?

And the frightening realization with this information dawns:  I’m only getting weirder as I harden.

WRITING:

He’d put it off so long that when he finally planned and gave in to its ways it was, he thought, something of a disappointment.  Like Fairbanks in the winter or the monsoon season of the island seas, there was a side he hadn’t seen or worried for.  But welcome is the holiday vacation from the real and so he slid willingly enough into the darkness.  He closed his eyes and even with the pounding rain and ice it still was a far better place to be.  All he wanted was to rest his weary mind and matter from the longer journey he’d been on.  And there is never here except for someone else; no path can be the same as that at just the moment in the shock of time that is the now and present for one man.  Soothing were the cotton sheets and spoon-fed by the mob he felt himself falling further still to depths and places where no one asked and no one gave and no one took away.  Prepaid by living to this point in time it was another kind of freedom that he sought if he were ever able to return.

But as I said, he’d put it off so long, and held his money tight as costs flew higher.  Inflation took the price beyond his grasping of the real, and no, he never did come back home again.
