REALTY?: Warm to Hot

I’m sitting here crying because Zach was finally awarded a $20k gold star in Kid Nation.

In other news, I found another propane company and within an hour someone came down to hook up my stove.  In the oil business, like everywhere else, one company has swallowed up all the rest so it wasn’t easy to find another company since my own supplier wouldn’t respond.  What’s nicer still is that it isn’t likely that this new company would respond so quickly if one of the owners didn’t remember me from when he owned his own small business  and had to sell out to the very supplier that refused to help me, a ten-year customer.

Nice when being nice comes back to haunt you.

REALITY?: Hurts

Not a good morning.  Banged my cut finger and got it bleeding nice and red again.  Then, armed with a my laptop in its shoulder bag and a cuppa coffee, took a flyer off the back steps and spun a bit before landing like a turtle on its back.  Nothing broke, not even the coffe cup which went flying across the ice-covered concrete.  Honest, it looked like it had all melted off the lawn and the driveway was fine so I didn’t even think to look out before my first step went out from under me.

Then, since we didn’t have the proper fittings for the propane stove, we didn’t hook it up last night.  And, the legs need to be put on, started with self-tapping screws which I cannot find but I know I have somewhere.  Called the propane people to come hook it up for me but the service manager is out and the next in power is nice, but can’t seem to comprehend what I want them to do.  I finally said, "I am without heat.  It’s as cold in here as it is outside.  The sooner you come out to hook up the stove the sooner I’ll be able to use and pay for your propane."

Update:  They can’t come out until tomorrow, and even then, wouldn’t hook it up for another week.  Suggested I see if I can get another contractor.  Told them I could do that, and if I get someone, they’d be my new propane suppliers as well.

LITERATURE & REALITY: Oopsie!

Yeah, yeah, I know; I haven’t been reading and writing about it.  But you must understand, in the shop my fingers are so cold I couldn’t hold the pages open if I even felt like spending time in outdoor temperatures reading.  Believe me, I run into the shop, knock a corner together, put the glue back in front of one of the electric heaters (yes, within 6 inches of it; they lie when they tell you not to put anything within 3 feet.  I put my hands right on the grill to thaw them out.  Believe me, it’s not hot enough to start any kind of piss-poor fire.)  and run back into the house again.  Today I took advantage of the 45 degree temperatures to stay in there and cut up cardboard (until I saw a lot of red streaks and realized I’d cut my finger with the Stanley knife) in preparation for the new propane stove.

Well, it did arrive today and I scared the poor delivery driver by telling him I loved him.

But I will get back to reading and writing about it shortly.  As soon as I’m warm and working effectively and getting through the mound of Christmas framing that piled up around my shivering body.

EDUCATION: The Furthering Of

Was thinking of taking a class this coming semester, maybe Creative Writing again since it’s going to be focused on fiction and while I’ve been through it already, thought maybe it’d serve as a ‘writing group’ and provide exercise and discipline to my writing habits.

But there are some graphic courses running, and while I’ve pretty much given up on that end as far as intense use of it for my creative output, I still want to know the programs and be able to work with them all at a much more knowledgeable level than my slow-pokey ways of learning have been.

Now I’m wondering if something more akin to the technical side of computers might be more in my line and abilities.  I like it, almost as much as writing and creating and I’ve already had a smattering of experience in the building of pc’s since ’97.

Or, I could just sit home and lounge around eating bon-bons.

TECHNOLOGY: Yay-Rah-Rah-me!

120807t Well I did it.  I replaced the laptop LCD and it’s working just fine.  The only problem I had was with those damn screws and I finally was able to loosen and get them out with plenty of patience and time-outs.

I’m just so happy to have use of the laptop again.   120807t2 I should’ve asked Miguel at Dell for some keys as well:  The i, o, e, l, s and n are worn away after three years, though I’ve tried repainting them in white it hasn’t worked.  120807t3 Odd though that the main computer in the house has gone through about a half-dozen mice, four cases, three monitors, four or five motherboards, at least seven hard drives, three power supplies, and four operating systems and yet…I still am using the original Logitech keyboard.

TECHNOLOGY: Yeah, right…easy.

Should’ve taken less than an hour to replace the lcd in the laptop monitor.  I think it could’ve.  The connections are easy enough.

Except that some effing animal put this one together and glued the bezel on and tightened the teeny-weeny screws (soft-headed btw) with the might of Superman.

This is why you have a tech do it.  When he throws the damn thing across the room in frustration, it’s his problem to pay for it.

LITERATURE & WRITING: The Bore Factor

You can always tell when a story’s just not grabbing somebody.  They find other things to do rather than read it.

I’ve been on James Agee’s A Death in The Family for over a month–it’s a short book.  I’ve been stuck on a couple of pages halfway through that should be quite exciting–the family "feels" the dead James’ presence in the house.

Is it the writing?  Certainly the pace, although it realistically mimics the hours of shock, grief and acceptance than follow an unexpected death.  Why then am I not compelled to go forward, why do I find working in Storyspace, putting the laptop together, ironing for God’s sake, more important to do?

I remember how I felt when I passed out my quickly written masterpiece novel to five friends.  Waiting, waiting, waiting; nothing.  Finally, a "it’s a long book."  Translated, that means boring.

But I will finish Agee up as soon as I can.  The story is great, it’s just that once I got out of it, I couldn’t seem to get interested in it again.  There are so many more books on the shelf to read though, and the rule is: if you don’t finish your meal, no dessert.

TECHNOLOGY: Well, it was faster….

Just got the replacement parts for the laptop screen—faster than lightning, yes but uh…I didn’t realize that it was really just the LCD screen and cables and stuff so that the whole cover has to be taken apart and put back together.  I did see a site somewhere where they had good visuals of the laptop parts and how to put it together.  Just have to find it.

Then work up the courage to take things apart.  Then gingerly put it all together again.  Maybe a tech would have been faster seeings that it may take me days to get up the nerve to do this.

TECHNOLOGY: Parts is Parts

Well, it’s as I thought.  I hooked the laptop up to the new pc monitor and it worked so I was able to contact Dell and had a lovely online support chat:

8:56:31 AM  Agent SMB_Miguel_167710
I am sending a replacement
8:56:47 AM  Customer Susan Gibb
Oh my. Is he really that sick?
8:57:06 AM  Agent SMB_Miguel_167710
would you like to receive the part and replace it yourself or a tech?
8:57:23 AM  Customer Susan Gibb
What part are we talking about?
8:57:46 AM  Agent SMB_Miguel_167710
the whole LCD with cables
8:58:24 AM  Customer Susan Gibb
I’ve built pc’s, so I might be able to do it. Is it difficult? Am I covered for a tech?
8:59:06 AM  Agent SMB_Miguel_167710
is not difficult
8:59:21 AM  Agent SMB_Miguel_167710
sending the parts take less time
8:59:53 AM  Customer Susan Gibb
Okay. Let’s do it that way then. I love the little guy and the faster he’s up and well, the better.

TECHNOLOGY: Laptop go boom-crash.

Actually, it’s been hinting for a while that it wasn’t feeling well.  Now the screen goes black and I can’t get it to stay on long enough to reach any program.  I’ve been putting off calling Dell because I can’t live without Latitude in my life, even though luckily I have the new main PC up and running.

Even now, I hate to make that phone call, knowing they’ll take Latty away for a while.  I keep hoping he’ll wake up and shine bright eyes at me in the morning, feeling chipper and completely over whatever bad bit of spam or whatever he ate that caused it.

EDUCATION: Some Hint at the Facts

So how many more generations of stupid are we going to produce before the liberals admit they might be wrong?

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development PISA 2006 Results

Steve Sailer’s "Makes You Proud to be an American"

And this goodie from the Financial Times:

"The US, the world’s largest economy, is below the OECD average in science and maths, and fails even to make the tables in reading because a misprint in the test confused too many students and invalidated the results."

While we sit around and discuss possible solutions, aka "fixes", let’s build another ball field with night lights, another wasted space library with three floors and one ceiling, some more computer labs so students can check their e-mail if they’ve time between phone calls and text-messaging.  Etcetera.

BLOGGING: And Writing

120307b1

Barbara Klaser, of the weblog Mystery of a Shrinking Violet, has graciously named me as one of five fellow writers actively promoting writing in the internet environment.  The Shameless Lion Award is the child of Seamus Kearney of Shameless Words, and according to the site:

“Those people I’ve given this award to are encouraged to post it on their own blogs; list three things they believe are necessary for good, powerful writing; and then pass the award on to the five blogs they want to honour, who in turn pass it on to five others, etc etc. Let’s send a roar through the blogosphere!” (read award details here)

I normally don’t involve myself in these things because I absolutely hate the idea of naming five of the many good writers out there and risk hurting anyone’s feelings if I screw up and forget them.  I have to put some more thought and time into this, although Easywriter at Writer’s Blog is an easy pick and I most certainly drag her into this.  She’s dedicated and eloquent and I well expect to see her in print someday.  Another would be Loretta.  Her novel’s on the back burner but we get to appreciate her own inimitable humor and sensitivity in her blog Pomegranates and Paper.

For the first part of the requirements, I would think that for good, powerful writing, it is essential to be a good reader, both of books and of people, so Experience is what I’d put this under.  Second, there’s a need for Openmindedness that knows the rules and knows how to break them effectively.  Third, and maybe most important of the three I can name, is Curiosity.  We discover the most about ourselves and mankin when we approach with interest and questions.

Thank you, Barbara, I do greatly appreciate this and will try to live up to the honor.

BLOGGING: Relogoed

Well if you didn’t stop by when it was up, you missed it.  It did give me incentive to make up a new one in a helluva hurry.  This one took about ten minutes but I like it.  I just play around in Photoshop with colors and textures and stuff and if something happens that I like, I just toss the text on top.

For those of you who stopped by and saw it but were too embarrassed for me, thanks I guess.

BLOGGING: Internet Promises Eternal Life!

NOT from Google:

"The loss of a loved one can be a troubling thing. The grief, inconvenience, and loneliness brought on by the sudden separation from a spouse, colleague, or even a casual acquaintance often causes a profoundly negative effect on productivity and quality of life. However, here at Google we have a solution: Google Immortal (or Gmortal). Gmortal allows you to continue making decisions, communicating with loved ones, and even maintain your blog long after you expire."
The above is from here, and is a spoof–but how far off are they from possibility?
Found the above as a post at Google Blogoscoped.Com, which has some excellent and informative postings on the Google way of doing things.
